Of course they are playing politics. Who told the media this was the biggest operation since the invasion? The government. It sounds more like the biggest staged media event.
Even if they did market the operation as something spectacular, the media's ignorance is what caused them to take the bait. Had they simply checked up on what 'air assault' actually meant, then they wouldn't have created all this hullabaloo over nothing.

I don't know about you, but I tend to prefer AAR's that include "no casualties"... not to mention that it's impressive to hear of 800 Iraqi soldiers taking part. But hey, i'm biased, right?

yeah, keep laughing at our expense...

bush and cheneys greedy little war does not = "ours", get a grip.

If you would like to help them go for it, you know where to sign back up I assume.

I'm still in... and have been since 2003 (and 1991-1998 before that). I went over there from 2004-2005, and will be leaving late next month for another 21month deployment. so ya, the war is "ours" from my point of view... and trust me, I definately have a "grip"!

Wrong its bushs war, not mine, do not include me in his mess, I just live/work here, I take no responsibility for the whackos that run the show thanks, I said my piece of what a bad idea it was and voted against him becasue of it. ;)

Why is Dubya baiting the media in the first place? Do you ever hold the Bush administration responsible for being deceptive? Do you ever hold them responsible for anything?

how were they deceptive in this mission? what was the "lie" exactly? That the AO was an insurgent stronghold? the number of troops involved?

what part of this story is the big "deception" in your view? I dont get it...

Who does 21 month deployments ?

I didn't see any when I was in 'Nam - although some did extend their 12 months up to 18 by 'Voluntary Extentions'
and some would try to 'Double up' if they had a death wish (or were Kill-Crazy).
Some would voulnteer again after getting stateside and not liking the home base they were assigned to.

My son is in Iraq right now - he was deployed for a year, returned and spent nearly 18 months in
training stateside before being deployed, again . . . for 12 months.

Marines have been doing 6 month in and out cycles - but who's doing 21s, Fangs or Guard ?

im going on what's called a "train-mob-deploy"... 4 months of school, 4 of mobilization, and 12-13 for deployment and demobilization. I've switched my MOS for this trip. My last deployment was ~ 17 months total as an infantryman...

In the footage I saw yesterday (it could have been old, who knows) they were attacking an empty desert.

Here's the answer; give the Iraqis an entire Division worth of M1A1 tanks and complete helicopter & fighter support, w/their pilots and see what happens. They will instantly attack US forces! They hate our F-ing guts.

That old footage was from a training exercise. Different from what I saw at lunch today.

Troop levels for the operation have already been reduced and it's expected to wrap up in a few days.

Now, add in that NO independent media were allowed and the writing is on the wall:

The operation near Samarra was NOT about rounding up insurgents. It was touted as being Iraqi-led but it was US hardware being used. No resistance encountered but they found what they expected to find? I'm sure they did.

This is a PLOY! It's a RUSE!

The GOP and the M$M will now start touting this as PROOF that not only are the Iraqi security forces gaining ground in their training but that the insurgency is weakening and the US is WINNING!

Anything to boost those sagging poll numbers.

And this isn't the first time this administration played politics with military operations. The assault on Falluja was held off until a week after the general election in 2004.

I'd like to see you prove your delusional conspiracy theory please. No changing the subject, no attacking me, just provide PROOF if your claims please.

I suggest you read the post you just quoted, then.

Oh, and employ the least bit of critical thinking, too. That usually helps.

anyone ever wonder why the homeland security threat levels stopped being raised every day as soon as the election was over?

"Operation Swarmer is a ruse!"

Yep, another glowing example of the fringe type's psychosis.

Everything is a ploy and a ruse by the evil Bush, Rove, and the military.

The flip side to that coin is creating the perception that Iraqi Security forces are capable of performing such missions...this could have been one large scale training exercise, with the understanding that resistance would be minimal, with the added bonus of finding and eliminating a few insurgent weapons caches.

We need to be doing more of this...getting Iraqi security forces engaged with the insurgency, and ultimately providing them with the confidence to maintain some semblance of stability in Iraq.

Anything to boost those sagging poll numbers.
I would agree with you if Bush were up for re-election this year, but he is not...at this point, his legacy is essentialy non-existant...those Republicans facing re-election this year will more likely then not distance themselves from Bush in the coming months, so PR move military operations are not really helping or fooling anyone.

It's not just about Bush. How naive are you? This is about the Republican party. The whole crooked lot.
This will be exposed for what it was eventually. Liars.
