Saw a documentry on "Operation: Paul Bunyan" on the History Channel the other day...and thought it was absolutely ridiculous.

-Our forces escrorted some people into N. Korea's De-Militarized zone to trim a poplar tree....
-They got ambushed by N. Korean Forces and 9 soldiers were killed
-To get back at them...the president sends B-52 Bombers and turns the Pacific Fleet around to backup "Operation: Paul Bunyan" in which they were on a quest to cut the tree down...

Is this not a total waste of Tax-Payers money for something totally stupid? Please, if I am wrong and missing something...let me know.

it was an exertion of our power over the Koreans. They needed to be taught they couldn't kill Americans without reprisal.

As far as Cold War wastes of money goes, this was pretty minimal.

9 soldiers getting ambushed and killed in a non-militarized zone is pretty much an act of war. It's called "demilitarized" for a reason. There's not much more N. Korea could have done to indicate that they wanted to go all-out with the U.S.

I'd say the U.S. reaction was an appropriate one.

So 9 soldiers were killed, and they retaliate, I hardly think that's a waste. I bet you're more of a waste on tax money than that. :p

Davy Crockett Nuclear Recoilless Rifle

USELESS?!?!?! that is teh aweseome!

haha I thought the same thing...until I read that the crew operating the thing basiclly had no chance of escaping long-term health problems :p

Surely we could automate this beastie given today's level of technology...
