everyone needs to know that our media can be influenced/manipulated.

some history-

In 1948, Frank Wisner was appointed director of the Office of Special Projects (OSP). Soon afterwards OSP was renamed the Office of Policy Coordination (OPC). This became the espionage and counter-intelligence branch of the Central Intelligence Agency. Wisner was told to create an organization that concentrated on "propaganda, economic warfare; preventive direct action, including sabotage, anti-sabotage, demolition and evacuation measures; subversion against hostile states, including assistance to underground resistance groups, and support of indigenous anti-Communist elements in threatened countries of the free world."[1]

Later that year Wisner established Mockingbird, a program to influence the domestic and foreign media. Wisner recruited Philip Graham from The Washington Post to run the project within the industry. According to Deborah Davis, "By the early 1950s, Wisner 'owned' respected members of The New York Times, Newsweek, CBS and other communications vehicles."[2]

In 1951, Allen W. Dulles persuaded Cord Meyer to join the CIA. However, there is evidence that he was recruited several years earlier and had been spying on the liberal organizations he had been a member of in the later 1940s.[3] According to Deborah Davis, Meyer became Mockingbird's "principal operative".[4]

In 1977, Rolling Stone alleged that one of the most important journalists under the control of Operation Mockingbird was Joseph Alsop, whose articles appeared in over 300 different newspapers. Other journalists alleged by Rolling Stone Magazine to have been willing to promote the views of the CIA included Stewart Alsop (New York Herald Tribune), Ben Bradlee (Newsweek), James Reston (New York Times), Charles Douglas Jackson (Time Magazine), Walter Pincus (Washington Post), William C. Baggs (The Miami News), Herb Gold (The Miami News) and Charles Bartlett (Chattanooga Times).[5] According to Nina Burleigh (A Very Private Woman), these journalists sometimes wrote articles that were commissioned by Frank Wisner. The CIA also provided them with classified information to help them with their work.[6]

Further details of Operation Mockingbird were revealed as a result of the Frank Church investigations (Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities) in 1975. According to the Congress report published in 1976:

"The CIA currently maintains a network of several hundred foreign individuals around the world who provide intelligence for the CIA and at times attempt to influence opinion through the use of covert propaganda. These individuals provide the CIA with direct access to a large number of newspapers and periodicals, scores of press services and news agencies, radio and television stations, commercial book publishers, and other foreign media outlets."

take note, this was in the JFK assassination era. there is a real interesting link between the zapruter film (one of the films that shows jfk's murder) and life magizine that bought the film. henry luce, the founderof time that created life magazine, was skull and bones......hummmm just like bush. many interesting things happened to this film. just some connections to think about.

I am still impressed by the gall of that plan that was drawn up to create terrorist attacks against Americans by the US gov a few decades ago to make it look like Cuba was worse than it was. I wonder what's going on today that we ought to know about?

Operation Northwoods. And no, it wasn't designed to actually kill anyone, just to appear as if Cuba did.

I think it's really cute how you say "operation mockingbird WAS" - like these programs don't still exist.

There is something interesting in this whole us vs. them thing. Yet as the world keeps on a changing any number of forces are battling to steer what amounts to public opinion which in turns steers the direction of the larger herd.

I think the in the grand scheme of things these phony CIA type op's are hardly anything new
in world history, but they do depend on a print or internet type media to spread the message. And once we realize we can look at the means of dissemination, we can realize its going to hit propaganda skewed the other way, and if we get too much competing propaganda, we end up with a Greshams law that the bad currency forces out the good.

And as these phony CIA operations are exposed, we also get the counter effect that far more damage is then done then the operation ever did positive.

?The Central Intelligence Agency owns everyone of any significance in the major media.? ~ William Colby, Former Director, CIA

I wonder if this is a real quote

Deep Ass.

I'm just glad our generation (at least most of us on AT Forums) can usually easily see through the bullshit. It's so frustrating to have logical explanations for government actions - when the logic suggests corruption - and have any baby boomer so indoctrinated that they get angry at the messenger... rather than angry at the establishment.
