Operation Miser

After I got back from lunch today I realized I just spent $8. I really can't justify spending that much on lunch. I mean $8 if spent appropriately should pay for my whole week of lunches. Well I'll be going to the grocery store after work to see what exactly I could get for $8 that would feed me 5 days a week.

List your miserly habits

I have way too many to list, but:
Never bought a new computer.
1: Only bought 1 new car in my life.
2: I have ALWAYS performed ALL of my own Auto repair, Home & Farm maintenance, repair & remodeling, Computer repair, etc. Rarely had to pay anyone else to do something if I even had the slightest idea that I could do it myself.
3: Rarely do I splurge on anything, but my Grandson!

I don't really consider myself "Miserly", just frugal.
I don't mind spending a buttload of money, or any money in general, as long as I get a good deal, OR, I get what I want. (Like a $30,000 truck which I paid less than $20K for!)

After I use a sheet of paper towel to dry my hands, I'll either lay it out or hang it so that it can dry and I can use it again next time to dry my hands.

i turn off the lights every time i leave a room

and i'll do a sweep of the house when i get home from work to turn off all the lights my family has left on all day long

we have three old cars, 1990, 1997 and 1998 all with over 150K miles, but we are going to buy a new car next month

I'm driving a 1988 car with an odometer that broke years ago at 120k something miles. I use razors way longer than I should. I buy cheap toothpaste and shampoo. I'm not paying for health insurance until I find a new job.

I eat lunchmeat on the cheapest bread that I can get for lunch every day. (Along with an orange or apple, some chips and a cookie or two.) I always drink water.

In the spring of 2003, I bought a 1993 model year truck with 140,000 miles for $3650. I sold it this past summer with 215,000 miles for $2000, and bought a 1994 truck of the same model for $2850 with 130,000 miles. I plan to drive this one 100,000 miles.

I also do all of my own home repair. The only thing I've paid for in three and a half years of living in this house is to have someone replace a garage door spring. My chimney is beginning to fall apart, but I keep patching it with a back of Quikrete. $2 repair vs. $3000 to have it rebuilt.

We keep the heat in the house low enough that we are freezing every night when we go to bed.

Speaking of buying used trucks (and cars), that is another way I've had over the years to save money.
For the better part of 20 years, I would buy 1 or 2 cars/trucks every year, cheap as I could find. Then, on the evenings and weekends that I didn't have to work, I would fix them up, do whatever needed to be done to them, and then sell them either at a profit, or at minimum break even on them. Buy another and start the cycle over.
So other than the one expensive Truck I bought in '87(kept that one for 10 years though!), I virtually paid zero for the actual vehicles themselves! My only transportation costs were gas and insurance, plus whatever little money I spent on fixing them up.

I'm not miserly enough ... nor is my wife 😛 The best I can do for you is to say that I crank down the heat every night.

I avoid going out to clubs, drinking alcohol, or hanging out with friends to do activities. For some reason I rather put the money in my IRA.

Sometimes eating Kraft Mac & Cheese, or Top Ramen for lunch. 🙂

Taking my own snacks into a movie.

Reusing the same bath towel for a week

Squeezing every last living drop out of the toothpaste tube.

Lighting matches as bathroom deodorizer

Using the same drinking glass all the time

Those are some of my habits. 🙂

i rationalize eating lunch out every day by taking 40 minutes and telling myself that the additional 20 minutes of work pays for lunch.

Been packing lunch for quite a while. I only eat out once a week. I do use coupons and whatever else I can to get the best deal I can.

I fold toilet paper again and again for re-use.

I flush the toilet once every two weeks to conserve water.

I run around the block to cover myself in sweat, which I use to wash myself, to conserve water and electricity.

I force children to go inside of a large box with a hole cut into the side of it, and pretend to be Tom Brokaw reading me the nightly news, to save on cable and electricity.
