I think the reason I never feel compelled to donate to our troops is that I feel they are in that situation because they chose to be, there are many many many more people in horrid situations by no choice of their own. I'm not downplaying the difficult times the troops may be going through, but I would much rather (and do) donate to starving and impovrished children not only in the US but throughout the world....
