Alright, One More Time. In the last month ive been looking for an operating system. I want Windows XP. Every store I go to, best buy, walmart, kmart, sams club, ram technologies, computer wizars, and so on, all of those stores have the Windows XP box, but when I look at the box it always says something about having Windows 98, ME, or 2000. It says they need a code or something from one of those. Is there a version of Windows XP that I can just install and then it will run?? All of those arent upgrade versions, they say full version, will they work on a black hdd?

A full version will not require a previous version of Windows to install.

What you want is something like this: http://www.newegg.com/app/View...=37-102-151&depa=6.

Or, if in doubt, ask a store employee if it will suit your needs. A K-Mart worker might not be the best person to ask, but someone at Bestbuy or something would probably be able to help you. And make sure they have a decent return policy (watch out for restocking fees).

Directron does a good job explaining what kind of hardware purchase is needed to fulfill MS's licensing agreement and even gives you a drop down box with ideas. For example a $2 mouse will fulfill the requirement.
