Operating System question? And upgrade question!

Ok, I'm basically just upgrading my computer with parts I bought from newegg. The computer I have now is the eMachine T2615. Well, im upgrading just because performance wise I'm just not happy anymore. So, I bought some key parts I think would make a good upgrade:

VIA KM --->>> Asus A7N8X
Radeon 7000--->>> nVidia 5900 NU 2.2ns
I'm also upgrading a few other things like case,psu,heatsink and fan.

Now I'm going to be using the same 120 GB hd that came with my eMachine. Came with preinstalled windows xp and that crap that came with it. Now what I want to know is if after I reformat put all the new things in is if I'm going to have to buy a new operating system?

I'm going to be keeping all the other stuff I need like cd drive, floppy, dvd and what ever else i need. So any input about my upgrade would also being appreciated.!

Well if you format it, there will be no OS on it. So you would need an OS of some sort...


If you are going to try to use a restore disk, I am pretty sure that changing the mobo would make that not work. So yes, you will need to either buy an OS or look for a nice free one.

EDIT: So what would I do; because basically I would be using a restore disc? Explain to me what I would need to do please! Like after I bought it would I just install it? Because ill be restoring before I put the new motherboard in!

If your computer came with only a restore disk and you have no os cd, your probably won't be able to use it. The restore disk is put together exclusively for your old machine. When you try and do the restore, the software will tell you it is not the original machine. If it even did work, it would also install all the crap that was loaded on your machine as well.

What you are going to have to do is buy a copy of XP. If you have an old CD with ME or 98 you can buy the upgrade edition otherwise you need the full edition. You can then reformat your drive which will wipe out everything that is on it and reinstall XP fresh from the new CDs.

Hmm I always thought the Reformat cd was the restore cd? Sorry I'm just trying to figure this out, can I reformat from the restore cd or what?

Probably not in the way you are thinking.

Most restore CDs are built for people who want to reinstall the OS and all the other software that
they bought with the machine. Looking at it from emachines point of view, if their software does
a format without installing anything, then thier customers will complain that they only did half the
job.

If you get a copy of xp it will format your primary partition (c: drive) when you load it. Then once xp is loaded you can format everything else (if you have other drives) from inside xp.

So basically all I would have to do is just put in the New Windows XP, when I get everything put in? IE motherboard harddrive etc... I wouldn't have to use the recovery disc?

You own a legal license to Windows XP. If you destroy the old system (ie, part it out) the license will revert to you, not the machine. If the CD no longer works for loading XP (ie, it looks for a code from the board), you should download an illegal copy of XP and use your legal license with it Why would I say this? You paid for a copy of XP and you still own the license, the only person breaking the law in any way that they would be charged is the person supplying you that illegal copy!

So basically I would just use the Serial or w/e number on the back of my packet of recovery discs? If I don't "buy" another windows xp discs?

And to get this straight would I reformat before or after I put the new hardware in? Bc if you say before how would I end up doing that? The recovery discs would not work. Or would I just put the windows xp discs in and reformat that way? Then put the new hardware in? But, wouldnt that make me reformat again or install XP again after i get the new hardware in?

Put in you new hardware first. Then boot to the Windows XP CD. From there when you start the install, you will have an option to reformat the hard drive. It will automatically take you through the installation process.

Remember to back up anything on your hard drive of any importance because everything will be wiped out.

Well, I didn't get a new harddrive im going to use the 120GB one that I'm using now. I'm just putting in a new mobo, vc, psu, heatsink, and the rest of the stuff I use already into a new case. So should I just put the windows xp cd in before I move all the new stuff including the HD to the new case?

Assemble your new computer using the combination of new and used parts you've descibed. Once you've done that set your bios to boot from your cd rom. Put the new XP disk (from the sounds of things you're going to have to buy yourself a new copy) in your cdrom and reboot. It'll prompt you asking to boot from the cd and hit a key to do so. Then go through the XP setup steps and it'll format your harddrive and load XP.
