I downloaded and installed OpenSuSE 10.3 on an HP machine. The installation went without error but the system will not boot directly off of the HD. If I boot from the install DVD, select Install and instead of New Install select Other and Boot installed system it boots from the HD. The only message I get when trying to boot directly from the HD is Error Loading Operating System. Any ideas on what I can look at?

Sounds like a grub problem for some reason.. Boot up the 10.3 install cd. Go through a New Install. When you get to the point of it asking whether you want a new install or a upgrade install there should be an other option. Within that there might be a repair option or an option to reinstall grub.

I ended up using something called SuperGrub repair disk and was able to get the system bootable. The process was pretty much automated so I still have no clue what caused the problem but it seems to have something to do with different ways of referring to the same hard drive (HDAX vs. SDAX) plus the SuSE install set up my partitions with the swap partition on SDA1, the root on SDA2 and home on SDA3. When using this SuperGrub disk it referred to these same partitions as HDA0 etc.
