How closely are these related?
How do the vesions compare?

Will OpenOffice 1.0 = StarOffice 6.0?

The only substantial difference AFAIK is that Star Office include an Access-like database program which Open Office does not. Other than, the programs are almost (completely?) identical functionally and technologically. File formats are 100% identical.

StarOffice 6 is a commercial product. It is cheap, but not free. You can buy it from Mandrake (legally) or search in places with pirate soft. You choose.

Open Office is a fork of Star Office 5.x. Essentially they took it apart and maybe each part of it stand-alone (so no more annoying desktop environment stuff :0)

<< so 6.0 is not going to be made free like 5.x? >>

no they are going to charge for it but open office will be free.
It should be fairly cheap though, say $50.00 or so...

I'm glad they are charging, I want them to keep developing opensource products!!:D

Yeah. it's a very good products and well deserves to be paid for. You get MSOffice (and more) at a fraction of the price.

It's free, if you speak Chinese :Q
Won't Sun end up releasing a free download in a little while, but still offer the option to purchase the product for support reasons, etc?
