For Home users there is no reason to use Office 2003 if your doing simple task, Open Office is perfect for people who don't want to spend $400.
I'm a student...but it isn't worth $100 now that OOo has comea round with such good compatibility. The Stylist alone makes it a breeze for word processing and spreadsheets.

Is the general consensus that OO is just as good as Office or actually better in terms of features and ease-of-use?
Don't expect it to be just like Office. The spreadsheet isn't quite as easy to use as Excel for 1.x (I haven't done enough in 2.x to say anything other than they've done good tweaks in the word processor), and presentation bit is about as easy as Powerpoint, though requires more work (things have a very basic motif-like look, rather than being stylized by default).

The Stylist is what makes it much better than Office, IMO.

the 2 beta improved teh spreadsheets A LOT, i actually upgraded because of that, its now much easier to do graphing and such

I've been using 1.1.2 and I like it although it crashes more than I like. If 2.0 offers better stability, I could give up on Office entirely.

It consistently crashes if I try to move blocks around in a text doc.

does the spreadsheets have "Text to Columns" yet? Last I tried it, it didn't, and I use that function in Excel a LOT. There was a hack or plugin or something, but it didn't work as well as I needed it to. Plus OO choked on heavily formatted Word docs and templates. I'd use it a little, but I kept coming back to Word and Excel. Not to mention the lack of an Access counterpart.
