OpenOffice MIME type recognition in GNOME 1.4

Is it possible to have correct MIME typing of OO files in GNOME? After trying to get this working, I've come to understand that OO stores its files as zipped XML collections, which gnome-vfs seems always to associate as application/zip. Trying to create duplicate types with different extensions doesn't work - duplicate application/zip types are automatically deleted. Is there some workaround I'm missing, or is this at least handled better in GNOME 2? While I appreciate the modularity of OO's approach, it seems like a huge oversight to save files in such a way that the user can't associate a unique icon and application with them.
