It's my understanding that OpenOffice is a Java app, and as such, needs a JVM to make it work. For Windows at least, you can download it with or without a JVM included.

The thing is though, it doesn't look like it's using Java when it's running. I'm running XP 64, and soffice.exe is listed as a 32 bit process, even though I have JDK 5.0 64 bit installed. If I write a Java program and run it, it shows that java.exe (a 64 bit process) is running.

Basically I'm wondering how Java interpretation and JIT compiling and all that works in OpenOffice, since it doesn't look like Java's running.

So why is there an option to download a version that includes JRE and one that doesn't?

edit... nevermind, just read this:
Java: Java is required for complete OpenOffice functionality. A combined download for Windows with OpenOffice.org and the JRE included is listed as "Windows (incl. JRE)" (90MB).

I guess some of it's Java?

Looks like you're right, it's only for certain components (wizards and db): FAQ

OpenOffice.org 2.0 uses Java technology to increase its functionality: Java technology is used for wizards and for the database component; its use here does not affect the licensing of either OpenOffice.org or the Java software.
