Opening up an ipod classic

Has anyone tried to open an ipod classic? those things are insane. a friend of mine runs a pc shop and he offered to fix an ipod that wasn't charging right. needless to say, he offered to do it for $35 and it ended up taking all day screwing with it and it still didn't work. he couldn't get it to come apart and destroyed the side of the metal backing. I went down there with a big long craftsman pick and was able to get the thing apart. As it turns out someone got the thing wet and there was a burnt resistor on the main logic board and the dock connector contacts were all corroded. My buddy cleaned the contacts and put it back together and it still won't really charge, but oddly it did charge when hooked up to a firewire cable. if you plug it into usb it says device not recognized.

Anyways, thanks for making them harder to fix, apple. the case is now all fucked up because of the time spent unsuccessfully trying to pry it open.

OR you could have spent 5 minutes googling and discovered what the correct tools are.... and then if you didn't have the correct tools, you could have purchased them... like I did and spent 5 minutes getting my ipod open without any sign that I had done so.

The correct tools? according to http://www.ifixit.com/ its a putty knife and 2 ipod opening tools. I've successfully opened my 5th gen video ipod and 4th gen with no damage and no problem. According to the ilounge people and/or ifixiit, even if you do it the "proper" way, there is a chance of damaging it if you don't do it right. In this case, it was damaged.

TheStu, you are referring to the newest ipod and not anything prior?

i should clarify... the metal back is not really messed up. That is easy to bend back the way its supposed to be. Rather, what got messed up ( not by me :) ) was the side of the front cover.

Coincidentally, I am usually awake at 3am... I just stopped caring.

It was actually the iPod Video that I opened up, and I misread what you had put down originally.

I think people usually are at sleep at 3am.

obviously you didn't look at the dates.

I don't see why you'd care anyway but the whole reason for this thread was to inform people that it is not simple to open up the ipods anymore.

I think he was referring to your post that showed as being at 3am. However, your original post I answered before I left for work, then after getting home from work, I forgot about the thread, because I didn't care that much about it. No offense to you (though it comes out that way) it is just something that I forgot about because compared to everything else that day, wasn't real high on my list of important things to care about.
