opening my psu

is it dangerous to open ones psu, i heard somewhere that they hold their charge, and could shock ya good, i want to take out the fan that is in there, and replace it with a quieter one.

I have opened up a few PSUs and replaced the fans in them. I try not to touch any of the components (especially the coils). Never been shocked.

Many psu's have bleed off resistors to release the charge in the capacitors. Even if not, unplugging the power cord, hitting the power button and then waiting a while will reduce any residual charge. Avoid being grounded when working on the unit- don't put one hand on a steam radiator, or work barefoot on a concrete floor, etc.

You generally don't have to touch much of anything inside to change the fan....
