Opening my first android phone... Samsung Galaxy S3

Ever get involved in a group iMessage session when you don't have an iPhone? Its not pretty. You get erratic pieces of the conversation, sometimes texts from one number will come through and sometimes they won't.



On a side note, almost everyone I know has a smartphone of some kind. And its like pulling teeth to get them to use anything other than SMS text messages. There are so many better options out there, regardless of whether you're on an Android device or not.

We currently use HandcentSMS, is there a downside to that? What are some good alternatives?

It's actually not iMessage at all. Android stock texting app does not handle group messages correctly. A blackberry or windows phone would be able to handle them just fine.

Clearly both of you don't understand the greatness of iMessage.

I've had android in 1 phone and 1 tablet. I grew out of the age where tweaking and messing with my devices was fun. I value my time.

Well the millions of people out there seem to be able to use it just fine the way it is.

I hate imessage for this reason. I never get a regular text from the person. It always shows up as an mms that tries to download something that's not there, then finally loads the text.

That doesn't make any sense though. If you and I exchanged numbers, and I sent you a message, the first one is always a text. If you have an iPhone, they are iMessages after that point, and if you don't have an iPhone, they stay as texts.

iMessage does not do this. Another issue with android. Take it up with google and quit blaming it on apple.

Edit: I can't say I am surprised that so many of you in this forum immediately blame apple for your issues.

I am not totally sure how Apple determines if the recipient is on an iMessage capable iPhone, so it could be wrapping it in some sort of MMS type thing. I don't recall any hinkiness when my iPhone using friends texted my WP7.5 device, so either Apple is doing something non-standard and Android exposes it, or Android is doing something non-standard and Apple is exposing it. OR, cross-carrier comms is doing something non-standard and the combination of Apple & Android is exposing it.

Or it could be something specific to his phone/case/history/usage or if the sender is using a 3rd party app or what. My texts go to all my Android using friends and they all use a range of ICS/JB and whatever came just before ICS for the phone. Stock to stock, no problems.

I am honestly curious to hear what tasks doing stuff like rooting or changing roms has helped you with.

- It allows me to turn on GPS remotely (secure option, can't be turned on without physically having the phone or having root) if I ever lose my phone

- Turning on GPS through NFC Tag swipe. (No NFC on crApple )

- Changing apps (such as tracking apps) into system apps so that should someone ever get into your phone and Factory reset, short of flashing a new ROM, there is no way to wipe the tracking app off.

- Running Tegra2/3 only games on non-Tegra platforms.

- Full Nandroid Backup of your phone data/settings.. everything.

- Titanium Backup of individual apps and settings when you switch phones

That's what _I_ do off the top of my head. And every single one of them is useful.

SGS3 is the best phone out there - you won't be disappointed! I love mine so much, rooted it on day one, currently running a stock rooted JB rom with Shifter theme

Also CM10 is tempting but I enjoy the motion settings of the SGS3 way too much. I usually hate running stock anything but in this case I can't help myself

78% of the people that have answered the poll, in the mobile subforum, on a thread that has the words 'Android' and 'Samsung Galaxy S3' in it. Maybe hold the Yowza for now

When I used to play with my phone I was all over Android, now that I actually use it I prefer the iPhone.
