Opening more than seven tabs in Android

Hi :)

This probably has been spoke about on a thread but it seems pretty difficult to search for.

The main things which annoy me about my phone are the limited storage (and resulting lag) and the fact that I get tons of force closing when I use Opera browser (the only browser I like). Possibly this would be a problem with any browser.

I will admit that I often have 10 tabs open.

If I were to buy a tablet (Playbook/Tab/Nexus) or a phone (Galaxy Ace 2) do you know if this would be eliminated? Is Android/tablets just not meant to be used with more than a few tabs. I used my friend's HTC One X yesterday and it shut when I opened three tabs! Perhaps this was a weird once-off but I'm not willing to pay to buy a better phone if I'll have the same problems. Would I have to buy a very expensive phone for me to be able to browse without force closing?

How do you browse?

Thanks. :)

It's a function of memory. What phone do you have? I suspect it's a 1GB or less model.

When you say memory do you mean the RAM or the internal storage? Because I have an Xperia play and the internal storage is pitiful and nearly full. Not sure about RAM, I shall check.

786MB isn't very much unfortunately. Even on my 1GB phone I can run up against my RAM when I have a ton of tabs opened. It'll be the 2GB phones where you won't have to worry about it.

Alas :( I wasn't looking to spend much more than £130.

How many tabs can you comfortably have open on your 1GB phone?

I had 8 or 9 tabs with no problem open on my Note II (2gb) plus a game running. Could also be an Opera limitation - I don't use it because I dislike the company OR the software.

Sister in law was surfing on her S3 and complained of it "acting funny" and handed it to me. Somehow she managed to open every search she had done in a new tab and had 17 open on the default browser. Does that mean 16 is the limit? I don't know, just thought it was funny.

I have no problems with 10+ tabs on my Galaxy S2 using Chrome.

Depends. But if I keep opening tabs which will clear out all other apps on my phone, I can do over 17 tabs in Opera Mobile.

The problem is Opera's tab management isn't suitable for that many tabs and it becomes a bit difficult to switch tabs.

Also, when I go over around 20 tabs, Opera starts acting a little weird when I go between tabs. It's probably swapping memory in and out at this point.

Have over 20 tabs open in both chrome and the AOSP browser on my nexus 4 and nothing noticebale is happening. I don't us opera on my phone so I'm not sure how that would handle things.

Just tested on my S2, looks like there's a software limit of 23 tabs in Chrome but it's still smooth as butter with 23 tabs open, and it hasn't pushed my launcher out of memory either. My S2 has 758MB of usable RAM. Task manager claims 412MB total used. Running latest CM10.1 nightly.

Thanks for the replies :)

it seems all of you are using better phones than the one I was planning on getting (Galaxy Ace 2 not to be confused with the Galaxy S 2) but still useful.
