I usually download files to the desktop. I expand files to the desktop. I copy files to and from the desktop. So my desktop folder sees a lot of traffic. Does this cause speed problems?
At this point, when I open a jpeg from the desktop in IE, it takes about 10 seconds to load it, where it is instant from another folder such as My Pictures. I have tried defragging but that didn't help. Next guess would be scan for bad blocks, but that takes friggin forever. Stupid HD manufacturers had to go so big.
Drive in question is an IBM/Hitachi 80GB (I don't know what model). Is there anything I can try? Or should I just scan for bad blocks for 8 hours?
I didn't know what category to put this in, either. Kinda hardware kinda os kinda software... move as necessary.
