Even then it doesn't work since it depends on how well the developers have implemented the renderers compared to each other. Also some engines might've been designed to run better under one API than the other.

I believe so, yes. However it's only there for compatibility reasons as it's both slower and lacks features over Direct3D.

But those games should have good renderers for both APIs. W3 and UT are originally D3D titles, but thanks to the Mac and Linux ports the OpenGL render should be working fairly well, unless those platforms are really getting shafted.

The original UT OpenGL renderer had issues (it originally didn't have a Mac port though), but it looks like they are taken care of now; http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/

I was under the impression (haven't tried 2004) that the OpenGL render in UT2004 is basically as good as the D3D version. Same with the WC3.

HL uses an old version D3D.
