If MMORPGs count I'd have to put Asheron's Call at the top of my list. I spent so many great hours exploring that world. And every server I played except for Darktide had a wonderful community.

Fallout 3, Skyrim, Morrowind, GTA series, Sleeping Dogs and Far Cry 3.
Notable mention goes to Mafia II.

Sleeping Dogs was probably my favorite

About to start Saints Row 3

Pre-ordered Watch Dogs - That looks cool as hell

It's a toss up between Fallout 3 and GTA San Andreas for me.

That said, every OW game I have played has been great: Far Cry2, GTA 3/Liberty City/IV, Saints Row 2/3, Stalker Trilogy, Fallout New Vegas, the one I play the most and the most OW of them all, Minecraft.

So called "Open World" games are my favorite games, by far.

...

Mine: Far Cry 3, but then I haven't played too many of the others (yet).

You haven't played too many of your favorite game type? I is

Anyway, Just Caused 2 is probably my most played and completed game so by hours I would say I liked that the most. I also really enjoyed the Infamous games. I also love a good open world game, and definitely prefer the 3rd person action types. The first person ones are okay but I never got into the Bethesda games as much for some reason. Always get bored a good 10 hours in or so.

Right now I am looking into Fall Out 3 with mods such as better textures and ENB etc., I never played this game really but I heard so many good things about it.

By the way, FC 3 Blood Dragon was *shockingly* short, I finished this game as a lvl 10 not even having unlocked most things, I was stunned the game was over, even for a low-budget game.

Well "many" is relative, of course I played all GTA series and had a little stunt with Skyrim too, just not having the time ATM to play "many" of those games. As for JC 2, I don't know it but it looks VERY MUCH like Far Cry 3 and I have difficulties imaging it being "better" or on par like FC3. Right now I am looking into Fall Out 3 and try to mod it up a little.

Operation Flashpoint, I loved how you could totally screw up a mission and just go to a nearby base, steal a helicopter or tank and then complete the mission.

Sleeping Dogs, Just Cause 2, and Minecraft.

Not a fan of Bethesda games though.

Oblivion was my favorite of the ES series. I'm a big fan of open ended sandbox games and simulators. Farming Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator get played pretty regularly in my spare time.

It's nothing like FC3. FC3 is a slower paced FPS with a higher difficulty and a relatively more realistic approach to gunplay and carnage.

JC2 is a 3rd person action game where you soar across the map using a parachute and grappling gun and you can rain down explosive death from the sky. The single player campaign is repetitive, the voice acting is god awful, and there's almost no story... yet I STILL found myself playing to the end and beyond because it's just so much fun blowing stuff up in this game. There's tons of collectibles to find and guns/vehicles to upgrade.

I can't say which is better because they're both different and it depends what you're after. JC2 is much closer to Saints Row 3 than it is FC3. Just because JC2 takes place in the jungle doesn't mean it's anything like it. It's just sheer fun without anything else story-wise connected to it, so I can waste hours just screwing around in the game. I definitely got bored of far cry before this even though far cry is technically a much better game.

Skyrim, Fallout NV stand out for me.

I also like the occasional romp through Minecraft. Not really a builder, but the lonely explorer experience where it's just you, the world, and the monsters is a unique experience.

Games like GTA and Just Cause are great open world games but it just doesn't keep my interest because non fantasy/sci-fi games turn boring rather quickly for me.

In a sandbox/open world game it's important to me that you can interact with the environment...and also the AI must be decent if there are enemies around.

Some games are in fact "open world" games but there is not a lot to do or the AI is so stupid it's no fun to engage with them.

For example, I already attempted to play Fall Out 3 multiple times because I heard so many good things about it, but I simply cannot find a lot "to do" in that waste land and it somehow puts me off.

GTA series is VERY good to conveying a sense that one is really in a "living" world where you can interact in many ways..and not all games get that always right even if they are "open world" games, IMO.

Red Faction: Geurilla - By far the best, IMO. Only Sandbox game that I ever beat, because it was fun the entire time. Too bad they decided to can the franchise...

Morrowind was the first game that I went "wow!" in. Going into the mushroom forest was really awesome. You just knew the game had taken you somewhere else. The world felt alive even though the only thing around me were cliff racers.

I forgot about that game...that was a blast. That game had great missions, weapons and side quests...like the races and of the destruction timed quests. Wasn't there one where you had to hit those explosive barrels with your hammer and launch them into the structures?

Not my all time favorite but an honorable mention..

LOL o_O carebear!

Just kidding, I played on Morningthaw. :p

I agree whole-heartedly. Asheron's Call still had the best story / landscape of any game I've ever played. It was virtually impossible to get bored in that game, unlike so many of the other treadmill games out there today.

Other than that, Skyrim, Oblivion, STALKER: SOC, Crysis (although it felt too small), and Just Cause 2 (just for the sheer jackassery that can be had).

I bought Asheron's Call early after release, and played for a short period like an hour or two, wandering not seeing any other players with weird named things, and didn't like it.

Definitely Morrowind. It was one of the last games that drew from the player's imagination as well as providing atmospheric visuals and music (in my opinion, Morrowind is Jeremy Soule's finest work).
