someone should coem up with a nice program that does the computer voice of 2001 a space odessey

imagine your neighbor sitting at his computer and all of a sudden through his speakers he hears in that monotone voice.

"what are you doing, <insert their name here> ?"

you guys suck, you're going to make me hack all my neighbor's wireless just because you told me it could be done.

:D that is hilarious :p

on another note : how much protection do you think you need? I think almost any wep protection is fine, but one of my roommates insists on only allowing permitted mac addresses + 128 bit encryption + resetting the wep ever couple weeks or so.

kinda glad i just ran a 100ft cable from the router to my computer and gave up that wireless mess :p

I have a lot of experience setting up wifi networks. The security depends on where you are. If you're on a college campus, nerds there have nothing better to do than to hack wireless networks, so you need the highest security you can get. On the other hand, in a quiet residential area, even 64 bit WEP is enough to discourage wardrivers. If it ain't easy, they don't go for it.

MAC filtering works best though. Easy to set up, hard to get around.

I honestly do not have much expirience with wireless networks. I can set up a WEP, get computers to use it, and get mac filtering setup.

Personally : i use a lower encryption + mac filtering at home. I figure the main idea there is just to make sure people stay off our network (ie neighbors).

At my current place, it's a townhouse in apartment areas. Everyone is renting, relatively young, yada yada. The main purpose is just to keep all the college kids nearby from leaching our internet off their laptops.
Our router is old so WEP is the best we can do.

I figure if someone really wanted to get data/onto our network, the 64bit wep and the 128bit wep wouldn't contribute that much of a difference. But i'm not very strongly opinionated about the issue : I just wrote down the heinously long 128bit and got my laptop and desktop setup. Though when i format sometimes i wanna pull out my hair, but this issue has been solved by saving the wep as a text file onto my non format partition.

as long that the hot girls are there also!

actually i started messing with it last night and the connection from his house to mine is very weak, i would loose connection all the time. Finally i got a stable connection to try to connect to his router 192.168.1.1 but i guess he actually change the default password.

Keep monitoring the computer for pictures of these so called hot girls. Better yet, drop off a digital camera in front of their house. They will be taking nude pics in no time.

Then sell them to porno sites.
