I started working on a page today, Linux Help Page That is basically a help page for new linux/unix users. I am going to try to include information on several distributions, as well as kernel information. I also want to offer some info for advanced users. I need some input, on what you guys think I should include.
so far Ideas I have:

[*] Installation help [/li]
[*] Dual boot setup [/li]
[*] info on distributions [/li]
[*] Kernel work [/li]
[*] Tips and tricks [/li]
[*] Networking [/li]
[*] Connecting with PPP [/li]
[*] Cable/DSL setup [/li]
[*] Samba setup [/li]
[*] Apache Setup [/li]
[*] IP forwarding [/li]


any other ideas would help. I would also like to have an articles section, where we could give tips, tricky setup info, reviews, etc. You would recieve credit for everything you contribute. I would like to make this site a successful contribution to our community within a year. I would like to get a good foundation set up before I even start to advertise it, I figure it will be a few months. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Like the open source revolution itself, I figure if a bunch of us work together, we can make this great, and help thousands of people get started using these great platforms. Thanks to all who want to help



 
Interesting. Well you could add sections on configuring BIND, configuring MTA's (postfix, sendmail, exim, etc.), unless that stuff would go under networking, but seeing as how you mentioned both SAMBA and Apache separately I thought I'd throw those out. Also, which you've probably already thought of, a list of other sites/newsgroups with information/documentation.

Finally, general system security stuff is always good. 🙂

BTW I can certainly help with the stuff I've mentioned. See if shuxclams is interested as well. I was gonna get with him to clean up the IP MASQ links/explanation that he has put together, but this may work out better.

Oh yeah. Shell tips and tricks as well. Many *NIX users piss me off when I watch them interact with their shell. Mostly because they type too fscking much! Sheesh people if !$ isn't THE most helpful shell shortcut in the world that's because it's tied with tab completion. 😛

Dang! Okay, okay, shell scripting as well. Last edit...I think.
 
Good Ideas, see this is what I wanted. I know I am not a know-all here, so the more help and ideas I can get the better. Email me, and we can chat, and you will be credited for all contributions. If you do web design, maybe we can setup a trusted few of us with the login, and we can tweak it to perfection.

<edit> as you can see if you visited the site, I havent even started it yet, I did the little 10-minute automated page setup just to get a few meta tags in it, and start submitting to search engines, looks like sh*t, but I'll start on it this weekend</edit>
 
i got a couple of distros available, i want to install them all on one of my machines and see the ease of setting them up. let me know if you would like screenshots/documentation/etc on my little project.

velvtelvis, that's a cool idea. I think I have access to some old 486s and the necessary hardware to make that work. I also have access to a nice Sony Mavica Digital camera so I could probably take some shots as well.

Now, what to do first. Hmmmm.... 🙂
 
I'm aware of both of those projects, however...I find their documentation a little sparse for newbies. I was envisioning something a bit more descriptive is all.
