Open source Adobe Illustrator Alternative

Does anyone know an open source program that would allow you to create layouts in a similar fashion as adobe illustrator? So far I have tried GIMP 2.6 but have found it very hard to make layouts nicely and quickly. For now I am having to remote desktop to work when I have to work on weekends to use illustrator. Any suggestions would be great.
