Open question to P&N: should partisan personal attacks in thread titles be allowed?

I've seen a number of these sort of "ad hominem" and personal partisan attacks in recent weeks, and frankly I am disgusted by it.

As I understand it, a personal attack on any individual is a negative and derogatory observation made without offering reasoning or justification for the attack. For example, if I say "John Boehner is a lying bag of filth. The Republican party is a gang of hypocrites." That's clearly a personal attack. But if I say "John Boehner is a big liar because he says that the ACA will increase the long term deficit when in fact it will decrease it," well at least I have offered a reason and position which can then be actually debated on it's merits (I don't claim to know this is true, I'm simply using it as an example).

In a nutshell, my point is this: it's okay to have strong, negative views about a person or political party and express those views, but I think it's only right that you offer a solid and concrete reason for why you have that belief. Because otherwise, the statement "John Boehner is a lying bag of filth" is just a plain, blatant personal attack. And I think that's what offends me the most.

I've seen a number of threads recently where individuals made purely personal attacks in thread titles, and the mods here in P&N did nothing to change those titles. I won't name names because that's not what this is about. This thread isn't about retribution on any one person, it's about doing what's right in P&N and I feel like that's keeping personal attacks out of the thread title.

So what do you guys think about this? I would *hope* that I'm right, but I don't know. Maybe I completely whiffed and personal attacks in the title are a good idea. I'd like more feedback so I know where people stand.

I don't mind. Pins down the Faux News conservatard bubble boys.
If you let them go at it they'll eventually tell you what they really believe, then they get banned for their racism.

Fine with me. It keeps the libtards at bay, who resort to name calling and pulling the race card, just because someone doesn't agree with Obama's policies.

There are only a few on here who are really consistent with this practice. For the most part most people can act like adults and engage in discussion without the insults.

I don't even notice it anymore. Or, at least, I don't pay any attention to it.

What is oddly strange, though, I think the last couple weeks may be the most civil this forum has been in a long time! And I'm dead serious about that!

That's because incorruptible hasn't been posting. Anytime he is "gone" from the forum the quality always goes up.

Sadly others seem to be trying to fill his place.

His was the second response. You missed the other side of the coin.

We have two forums. In the first you can have the "tard" threads because it's wanted and in the second it's not. The way I see it this has already been handled-

Zactly right. The tender sensibilities forum is Discussion Club. It's only one click away!

Typical bleeding heart gimme gimme modern progressive mindset. One post above this is full of "consevetards" and other vitrol, but god forbid someone drops a "libtard". Then you're out for blood.

Personally I think a better solution is to open up a kid's-only forum for 21 and under. That would eliminate 75% of the racist modern progressives in P&N right there.

We have the Discussion Club Forum for folk who want to discuss issues. It is almost devoid of users because it is a forum in which ideas are to be rationally defended. The right isn't interested, actually is incapable of doing that, so the left doesn't mush go there either. What we can see from this, I think, is that the one true and sole purpose of a politics and news forum is to provide people who are filled with shit a place to take a dump. That is what the emotional need is. This is perfectly in line with the hidden truth about human beings, that they hate themselves and don't know it.

We were subjected to profound conditioning as children to conform to a norm that has no real definition, a constantly moving goal post, kept in line by putdowns painful punishment and the threat of abandonment. Had we not died psychically as children we would have not survived so we sold out to conditioning and became false egos instead of real people. What we do now is project our self contempt out on the world so we can pretend the world is the source of our misery. We are good little robot defenders of our conditioning. We were all so loved. We are loyal to the monsters who destroyed us, people just like ourselves. So we come here only for emotional, not intellectual reasons, to put each other down, to make the other guy feel the hate we really feel for ourselves, the hate and contempt for the different we used to be. We must eliminate from the world all evidence of difference in thinking so we can know for certain that nobody will ever disturb us in our tombs of psychic death.

So make no mistake, if you took away the ability to put other people down from this forum almost nobody would come here. Putting other people down is our mental illness and our addiction. It helps us to live vicariously, to insult and be insulted, and to walk away from it imagining ourselves victorious. In this way we can relive being put down without ever actually remembering our original pain. We get to pretend we are tough and manly instead of the damaged little husks we truly are. Pretending to be offended by the irrational imbecility of other people is just another part of the game. We actually love it and need it desperately. The whole idea is to make the other person feel the pain we feel by laughing at his attempt to do that to us. But I should have warned you about the red pill since you asked about the nature of the Matrix. It is a world in which the wool has been pulled over your eyes. It is a world in which your mouth will disappear if you try to speak. That is why you will wake up in a few minutes and forget every thing I said. You will feel right as rain.

Stopped reading right there. You progressives REALLY need to learn how to quit blaming other people for your issues. It's by far the biggest issue with the modern progressive.. Nothing is ever your fault, being unemployed, underpaid, etc. It's ALWAYS someone else.....

And you leave a stinking heaping pile with every post. Congrats on your working sphincter.

I simply stated scientifically demonstrated facts. What you gave me was pure opinion. What happened was, true to form, I offended your ego and your rationalization machine stepped in to deny so you wouldn't take in any unpleasant facts. You're like a monkey running around waving a sign with it's tail proclaiming it's an ape. You're so convinced you're an ape you can't see you have a tail.
