Open Office

OpenOffice 2.0 beta is much more impressive than I had though. I haven't had the need to try any better than version 1.2 because Writer is great. However, the OO team is doing a great job in increasing the loading speed of OO and added Base to compete with Access. The only reason I uses MSOffice is for Access because many business relied on Access front end for their day to day operation, therefore I didn't bother with newer version of OO till now.

The reworked interface/tool for OO is much cleaner and easier to read than the old interface (becoming more MS like interface with much of the tools hidden). Base is nice & quick, and it is just as good as MS with database linking, however it have some work to do if they want to to compete with MS Access (I hope that they fix the open bug when release because Base doesn't open when Writer is open).

I undestand why MS currently trying hard to get their partners/customers to lock in their applications with MSOffice, because OO has gone a long way from beta 0.7 just 4 years ago to a very competitive product.

Sorry for the rant but, I though that OO deserve a head up for being such an awesome product that is able to compete with MS flag ship money maker.

Good product for small businesses that need to save money. Luckily I'm near the msft campus and can get cheap software from the employee store.

I use OO as my primary word/etc. stuff. The new version made it a very good alternative even without the bonus of it being free. The only reason you'd use the old OO over MS Office was because of the price difference, though . . .

EDIT: actually ive never used it. i only typed the above because i wanted to type it :/ i wanted everyone to be like omg that phrase is hilarious but obviously it isnt so ill change it.

i use ms office. its okay :/ how good does this openoffice work?

Yes it was partially price driven, and was also trying divert MS dependency for my old company. There are many medium small business still uses old btrieve/dbase/access databases and is looking to convert to newer database and they tend to head toward MSSQL instead of MySQL. Many fears of getting off Access because they think other database are expensive, or their solution is to get to the SQL-Server because the sales man said so.

I had made the decision to get out of the IT field and soon will have my own general contracting business. I?m intending to go with all open source apps, primary Office apps will be OpenOffice, and Firebird/PostgreSQL/MySQL will be on the backend. And, I want to have my own database to assist me with bidding home building & landscaping contracts.
