Open-ended Round Trip Flight? Please help.

Hello,

I am planning to goto Costa Rica for a semester (late august to late december) for school. Anyways, I am looking into flight information. I Know the date that I want to goto Costa Rica, but I am unsure when i will Return. I know it what it will be within a 2 week length-but I am unsure what the exact date will be, this will be determined near the end of my trip. What are my options to purchase a ticket Like this? I doubt I will be able to get a ticket like this on Orbitz/Expedia..Any advice?

I think you need to go through a good travel agent. There are tickets that allow an open return date, but there will be some restrictions. You have to make sure the ticket is for a fare class that is generally available - you don't want to go to use your ticket and then find out it's going to be a week before you can get an available seat in that fare class.

It might be cheaper to buy a ticket with a specific return date, with no added charge to change the date.

Don't try this online. IMHO it's too complex.
 
I believe you have to purchase a ticket with your return date already stated for international travel. But if you buy a full-fare unrestricted coach ticket, then you can easily change the date.
