open drivers for damit

So with amd opening up the source for these cards would it be possile for someone to write drivers that allow you to use the computational power for things other then 3d? I work in audio post and more dsp is always good. There is a audio dsp card called the uad-1 made by universal audio. This card is actually a video card that has been transformed into a audio dsp chip with great results. At this point its power is underwhelming as its over 6 years old. i am just wondering if the opening of the source will allow people to use these cards in ways other then writing drivers for *nix.

That already happened, quite some time ago. Folding@Home (the distributed computing project) developed a way to use X1900 & X1950 GPU's for things other than 3d rendering, as the 5th poster on this thread can attest: http://forums.anandtech.com/me...=2100317&enterthread=y

edit: BTW, nice system you've got there.😀
edit #2: Here's some other people using GPU's for things other than rendering.
