Here is a 2014 review of this SSD :

http://www.nikktech.com/main/articl...lim-s55-240gb-ssd-review?showall=&limitstart=

Controller is Phison S8.

Another review from 2013 indicating Phison S8:

http://www.madshrimps.be/articles/a...lim-SATA-III-240GB-SSD-Review/3#axzz43DMYa528

(I checked on the "TT57G2GAHC" NAND chips being used with this older S8 model and it is MLC upon Google search)

A much newer review from 2016 indicating Phison S10 controller:

So from that newer review, I'm not seeing much to dislike. I may have to snag one even if it's just to have around.

That newer review has an interesting testing methodology, seems quite thorough and this drive spanks the largest BX200 (which granted isn't difficult). Color me impressed. Need this to pop into my pfSense router just for funsies.

So what are we saying here? This is an older drive/technology or this is a good buy? I'm looking at the 480 gig for under $100...

It's g2g, I haven't seen any poor performance numbers and if reliability of Silicon Power's USB flash drives is any indication, their SSDs will serve well. Even with the spec change, they are posting great numbers for a TLC. If there is a problem, don't know how well their support would handle it though.

How would they compare to my Crucial m500? Just some preliminary research for a plan to go from 240Gb to 480 (or higher if prices drop even more). SSD and Hard drive comparos (beyond the obvious) is like a foreign language.

The obscurity here is that the old controller model in the 2014 reviews beat out the Crucial MX100 which is (slightly) faster than the m500. With the new controller, this guy still compares favorably but in the only recent review, they compare it with the BX200 and MX200. It handily beats the BX200 and nips at the heels of the MX200 so with interpolation we can say that the s55 is between the m500 and MX200.
