This is a great laptop upgrade for anyone with a Sempron processor.
This is the low watt model with 1mb cache too.

I'm wondering if I should upgrade my Turion 64 ML-32 (1.8, higher watt, and 512k)? Think it's worth it??

Newegg...

All Turion 64 @ Newegg...

SWEEEEEEEEEEEEET price. These things work in the eMachines m680x series laptops with a bios update.

That's what I'm thinking too. I have an Acer TM4402 (1.6GHz Turion ML-30. I've extensively checked Acer's tech support sites and there's nothing mentioned about CPU upgrades. I have the latest bios installed, but even that bios is almost a year old.

Plus, I still have 1.5 years left on my extended warranty I purchased.

This would be a nice upgrade though!

HHHmmmmm. man that such a good price and would probably extend the life of the lappy a while ( I have the same one as MichaelD). Now I have to see how easy it is to open up my lappy to replace this cpu... anyone have experience with opening up the acer travelmate laptops?

well for what its worth (not too much) a poster on new3gg website says the upgrade works with the travelmate:

Excellent processor

Pros: Very low power consumption... I upgraded my Acer TravelMate 4400 that I got off Newegg also from a 1.6GHz ML-30... this one uses less power and runs faster

Cons: None that I can think of... I just wish more laptops had this processor

I missed that review!!! Maybe we should email him to see how he got the thing open? AND...did he break anything in the process? Laptops suck to work on. They are all held together with a combination of screws and snap-fit pieces...the problem is knowing whether "these two pieces" are held together w/a hidden screw or whether you can just pull them apart. :Q

I have contmplated emailing Acer to see if they have a service manual available for DL. But honestly, their website SUCKS and I've not been able to find an "email tech people" type link.

The 4402 is a nice laptop; the separate ATI graphics card (X700 IIRC) provides decent gaming ability, assuming you keep all the details/textures on the low side. Another 400MHz would be a nice (33%) upgrade in horsepower .

I'm tempted to dig around for a desktop motherboard that'll take this and throw together a cheap upgrade for what I'm on now.

FWIW, I have a cheap desktop that the kids use (eMachines D3315, uses a FIC K8MC51G, North: NVIDIA C51G / South: nVidia MCP51G) with a 754 Sempron 3300+. I've bumped both the RAM (to 1.5GB) and the video (to an X850XT) using left over parts. Two questions: how do I find out if this board would support the Turion, and (if so) would there be a significant upgrade in performance (main concern would be for gaming - the system is fast enough for other uses...)?

Well, it couldn't hurt since your Sempron is the 128k L2 version. This chip has 1mb L2 (that's 8X the cache). I am not sure if it works though.....hopefully someone here knows how well these work in a desktop. This chip is a good (known to work) upgrade for $55 shipped.

It appears that this CPU will also work in a Shuttle SK21G system. Just not in my SN85G4 system. :(
EDIT: Link

I will be getting one of these myself for a file server, but I always like to know how these prices relate to what you can find on ebay. It looks like if you just want a lower power processor and don't mind it being 35W and 1.8 GHz, then you can get a used one on ebay for less than this. However, MT chips (the 25W version) are much less readily available on ebay.

Install cpu-id and make sure you have a socket 754 board. If it is (mobo) model 30AE you should be good. The 30AE is very popular in lower end HP/Compaq laptops, and Newegg user reviews give this board a thumbs up.

I was thinking the same thing, but I have a Ferrari 3400 (its Skt 754, but uses a mobile Athlon 64 3000+ processor). Its been almost 3 years since the last BIOS update, so I don't think it'd recognize it as a Turion, but it might work. But its not worth it for me because if it doesn't work, I don't have a desktop board that can use this :( Anyone know if the acer's K8T800 board can use this cpu?

Nice find on the service manual.

currently considering whether or not its worth it...

BAH - not supported by Compaq's BIOS. Last updated in 2005. They suck. Acer is better.
