You might want to check out the HP Compaq nc6000 buisness notebook. I have one myself and it still works great. I only got it cause I didn't want all the other crap that comes with the home/retail notebooks.
I have a NC6000 from work and I also think it is a great laptop. But, the prices seemed high if you wanted to buy one. 1400x1050 and Radeon Mobility 9600.

Perhaps the nc6000 you have is an SXGA+ ????
The one I saw was an XGA, and, although it was extremely well constructed (maybe better than a Thinkpad even) the XGA screen had almost zero viewing angles as well.
The problem seems to be finding something with good XGA in size 14.1" or smaller.
The larger widescreens all have better viewing angles.
