It's XP Home (Dell edition). Naturally I don't have any additional copies to give away. What do I do (that doesn't involve piracy/buying a new copy of XP Home)?

the sn is on a sticker on the side of his machine. Burn him a copy, it's legit.

Yes, I'm aware of that beautifully awesome caveat of the WinNT licensing scheme, but the last time I tried (Win2k) a normal OEM copy would not take a Dell serial number (wtf?)

you mean a normal RETAIL copy? AFAIK Retail, OEM, and Corporate are the only three subdivisions of WinXP (not talking Home vs. Pro vs. Media Center).

Retail and OEM share a common serial number pool.
Not sure why the Dell SN's didn't work back in the day. MAYBE they do now, can anyone confirm before I make a REALLY big mistake and reformat this thing only to be unable to use the S/N.

I'm pretty sure they don't...I have a nice 6-in-1 CD of XP that allowed me to use a friends' CD-key when reinstalling Windows on his computer, when the retail disk he had didn't accept it.

I tried to put the Dell serial number from my Dimension 4600 on another computer, but it didn't work. I had upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro on that system and wanted to use XP Home on another box. I even tried key changers to see if it would accept, but it didn't. Oh well. Good luck!![]()
