Are the fans ontop of heatsinks a special type? It just looks like a normal 80mm fan to me... and I well.. snapped part of the plastic off on mine.. we wont go into how it happened.. but now there is a clicking noise as it goes around..

Is it alright to just stick a new 80mm fan ontop or kiss my heatsink goodbye?

You should be able to put any 80mm fan on there. Just make sure it's got the 3-wire connector for RPM monitoring. Some motherboards won't boot if they don't detect a fan connected to the CPUFAN header.

as said above, if you have a proprietary system (dell/hp/etc.) you may have other issues, as they often use a non-standard fan header.
