Story

This is exactly what the US needs to do in order to win back some Hearts and Minds. Unfortunetly the Bush Admin is clueless like usual.

Career diplo tells it like it is, gets smacked by cronies and then recants. Surprising that he didn't apologize within hours.

His version of events is politically incorrect---so his boss GWB&co. forces him to recant---the norm is restored---Iraq continues its journey deeper down the toilet.

The more things change the more they stay the same. Until one day when Iraq goes from pre-civil war to full civil war. taking teh whole mid-east and maybe the world into open warfare.

And the Washington claim will be that no one saw it coming.

I doubt that recanting will do him any good, no matter what he's been led to believe. 500 years ago, they'd have burned him as a witch- today, only his career goes up in flames.

For the Bushies, the truth is what they say it is, any any display of disloyalty (actual thought) is viewed with extreme prejudice...

Poor bastard won't last a year...

"Upon reading the transcript of my appearance on Al-Jazeera, I realized that I seriously misspoke by using the phrase 'there has been arrogance and stupidity' by the U.S. in Iraq," said Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in State's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs.

I think Fernandez was being completely truthful. The phrase he actually meant to use was, ". . . the U.S. strategy exhibits all the hallmarks of having been planned by someone in a persistent vegetative state."
