Oops... cracked core....

Last night I wanted to give my brother's computer a big heatsink to help with overheating. Well when I removed the craptastic Cooler Master heatsink I took a big chip off one of the sides. I put back the original heatsink and guess what? It booted up and still works!!! How much longer before it burns up or something? I didn't put on a new layer of AS3 because I was in a hurry to see if it worked.

Well..if it works now, even after being chipped, it will most likely continue to work for a long time. Don't worry about it, just be careful next time.

He was having an overheating problem with the stock heatsink? Any chance it was on backwards or had been removed after initial installation? Remember, the stock thermal pad is a one-shot deal... after it's melted to fit, if you take the heatsink off you'll want to scrape off the used-up pad and switch to thermal grease.

Since it's working, I'd think the main danger now is that it's got no thermal compound. Dose it up and let it run. 😎

Yes, the stock heatsink was really crappy, there was AS3 applied to the core previously, no thermal pad. It wasn't on backwards, I would go back and remove the EVIL heatsink but I'm afraid of damaging it even more. I'll just leave it alone now, if it overheats and dies it's time for an upgrade anyways....

If it works well, that's great, leave it; you were lucky. Don't be surprised to see the comp doing strange things, though. 😛
