Ooopsies.. CD Shatters in my burner.. Advice? **Now With Pics**

I don't recommend it. CDs are made of fiberglass, and that crap gets everywhere. Once it gets into the drive mechanisms, it will seriously screw things up.

Well ya normally i'd do that, but the jerks that i purchased this part from said.. well you have to bring the whole computer in for us to c heck and make sure something is wrong before we can do an rma. you fvcking bastiges.. i need my computer for school and i don't have time to bring it down and subsequently let you keep it while the rma is being done. just give me a new burner!

If the place you got it from is saying that, and you know it's a Lite-on drive, then just RMA it with Lite-on.

why has no1 asked this---

HOW THE H3LL CAN A Cd JuST RANDOMLY SHATTER IN A BURNER?!?!? what did you put a cd in the burner and then play soccer with it?>

Something similar happened to me. I just opened the top of the drive and got all the pieces out. Doing this will most likely void the warranty, so keep that in mind.

Same thing happened to me, and a peice is still inside. My assumption is that it will work if it isnt covering the lazer part. Every time i take out the drive i hear the peice rattling inside. Sucks for your brood war cd though 🙁

umm...
no...

literally i was playing brood war and i heard this violent snapping noise... then i noticed the hum of my burner die and saw pieces fly out when i opened up the burner bay.

wtf what causes this? thats so random

the disc is spinning at about 5200 times per minute which causes microfracturs on the cd...

or the ball bearings mess up

Take it apart and get all the pieces out.
If it works, then you're ok. If it doesn't you're screwed.

Since it was a regular CD you should be OK. If it was a CD-R, it's a different story though. A CD-R spreads out millions of conductive silver confetti everywhere when it breaks and it can cause electrical problems inside the drive.

if your time is that valuable and you are that worried, go buy a new one, put it in and rma when you have time.

if not, live with it.

what did you really expect us to say to this?

maybe you're thinking of a cd/rw.. cause a cdr is just like a cd...

Except for that whole, you know, ability to write to them by commercial laser products and not industrial stamping machines ... yeah, totally identical.

CD-RW and CD-R both use a DYE, very unlikely to cause the kind of damage being discussed. a regular CD (which as STAMPED vs Burned) could possibly have conductive silver inside. i can't say for sure, but it is more likely to be true regarding the CD than either the CD R or CD RW.

LOL!

Walley, have you ever snapped a CDR in half. It's MESSY! No, not a CDRW, a CDR. You get these little slivers of whatever the dye material is in there all over the place. Looks like a pixie dust explosion.

Not fun to clean up.

The CD manufacturer would probably replace the broken one for a nominal fee, if you send the pieces to them. You may need the receipt for it.

There's no way I'd stick another good CD in that drive. If it screwed up once, it can screw up again. Buy an identical drive and return that one in it's place, with the explanation that it destroyed a CD. Make sure the serial number on the drive matches the box. You do have the box it came in, right?
