We've had difficult times in the past. We will have difficult times in the future. It is not the end of violence; it is not the end of lawlessness; it is not the end of disorder.
But the vast majority of white people and the vast majority of black people in this country want to live together, want to improve the quality of our life, and want justice for all human beings who abide in our land. Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote so many years ago: to tame the savageness of man and to make gentle the life of this world.
I find it so frustrating, and so sad, that so many of today's youth have squandered the opportunities presented them by Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement. There is a strong sub-culture in the black community that adheres to a victim mentality, and another subculture which lives in a gangsta-rap type mental state. Men and organizations like the NAACP and Al Sharpton do nothing but retard the progression of the democratic ideal, and the gangster rap subculture destroys the hopes, attitudes, and minds of millions of young people, of all races.
Unfortunately there is nothing I can do as a white man to directly combat either subculture, other than by applauding such men as Aaron McGruder and Bill Cosby for having the courage to voice their well-thought out and intelligent observations. I do my best to treat each person I meet with courtesy and respect, regardless of their race, and to respond professionally and skillfully when I must with regards to my job.
