Ooma Telo

$45 off w/ promo code EM45XYX45, ends 1/21

Final price $139.99 with free shipping.

Comes with free Bluetooth adapter.

Mail in offer for $40 credit towards Ooma services.

Ooma is a low cost VoiP service. You buy the hardware device, hook it to your broadband internet and hook up your normal house phone to it. The basic service is "free" but you have to pay government regulatory fees which vary by region (my zip code is under $4/mo). All domestic calls are free, plus they purport to offer low prices on calling other countries. They also can port your existing number for a fee.

To my knowledge, this is the cheapest the Telo model has ever been available, let alone a new one instead of refurbished and including the Bluetooth adapter.

skype is only about $5 a month for unlimited calls with your own number. ooma doesnt seem bad though, much better then majicrap.

isnt that skype rate a special offer? it would eventually cost more, and upon visiting their page for plans it says in the bottom you cant make emergency calls so not really a true replacement while ooma is i think

DOH! Maybe deal was one of those "or until funds expire" kind that Newegg seems to like these days?

Ooma is good for those who want to use their normal cordless phones to make/receive calls.

I have ooma and im satisfied with it, havent tried to send a fax with it yet however. I believe you have to subscribe to the priemier service to use the bluetooth. Refurbs come up on woot at this price a couple times a month.

I am also a happy Ooma customer. We were early adopters so we actually don't even pay the taxes - we joined before those were implemented. We do not fax, however so I cannot speak to whether or not that is possible. We do use the phone quite a bit tho and it is indistinguishable from a land-line.

The Telo with Bluetooth adapter is back in stock.. but the promo code "EM45XYX45" is no longer valid, apparently.

At any price under $200, the Ooma Telo and its basic landline services are a "steal".

FWIW: If you don't want/need the Bluetooth adapter, you can get just the Telo device at $199.99 at Newegg.com as well here (for however long the sale lasts): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833888002

That said: I am also an Ooma customer and am an enthusiastic advocate of their services.

Faxing: Yes, it can be done on the primary line. You may have to adjust some settings via the web interface at https://my.ooma.com. I am able to successfully send faxes using my Canon MP830 multi-function inkjet printer.

The monthly cost for taxes for me is about $3.50. I also subscribe to the "Premier" service set at $10/month for a total of $13.50/month spent on home telephone services. Compare that to the ~$55 I was paying for a far more restricted feature set on Vonage and, previous to Vonage, on traditional landline telephone service.

Our "favorite" feature of the Telo is its ability to broadcast an incoming caller as they leave their voicemail if you choose to "screen" an incoming call. If it's a call you really do want to take, you just pick up the phone and talk to the person (thereby cutting off the voicemail recording). This is an experience that is identical to having a landline telephone service with a seperate answering machine in your house. No other VOIP provider has this feature on their devices that I'm aware of. 🙂

Awesome! How is receiving FAXes? I'm thinking of ditching my old POTS FAX line in favor of VOIP but want to keep one POTS line at least for a while - so I would move the FAX line over first.

Unfortunately, I cannot speak with any authority on receiving faxes - only sending. 🙂
Therefore, I'll refer you to http://www.ooma.com/node/485 for information on Faxing with Ooma.

It's also probably a good idea for me to point this out:

A common question comes up - why are faxes not guaranteed reliable 100% of the time when using VoIP technology? The reason has to do with how faxing was originally developed. The faxing protocol was originally developed for regular landlines. Unlike IP networks which route VoIP, landlines are fairly lossless. This makes faxes less resilient to dropped packets and delay inherently present in all IP networks today. Ooma is currently looking into new ways to improve the reliability of faxing with the Ooma system, including use of the T.38 FoIP protocol.

Note: If you find a need for reliable faxing, we recommend that you keep a Landline for this purpose

Been a customer for a little over a year maybe month 13?

I have ooma and the second line comes in handy. The service is much more reliable than Vonage ever was and I love the feature if my Ooma is unreachable that it will call my cell phone. My cable company has some connection issues every couple months. It has good sound quality but I also have a very high speed internet connection to help that.

I dealt with tech support early on because I overshot my settings and had this weird audio drop for about 8 seconds after a few minutes of being on the phone that would randomly occur. They were probably the most polite and friendly people I had every talked to and one of the very few that actually put an engineer on the line with me and had me load my own rom in the device.

I would say this deal is hot especially if you have something like Vonage Ooma is much better.
