OTTAWA -- Say goodbye to buck-a-bottle beer in Canada's largest province.

The Ontario government last month quietly raised the minimum price that can be charged for beer, to $25.60 from $24 for a case of 24 bottles.

That 6.7-per-cent increase in the floor price of a case, bottle deposit excluded, has nothing to do with supply and demand, production costs, overhead or distribution expenses. Instead, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario sets minimum prices as part of its "social responsibility" mandate established in 1993. Translation: If alcohol is too cheap, you may abuse it.

🙁 <---more expensive beer 🙁

lol, government in charge of social responsibility!?!?! the most corrupt, power hungry, hypocritical establishment IN society... full of self-serving politicians... and you guys put them in charge of social responsibility... rofl

im sure this price increase will just wipe out alcoholism... why didnt we think of that before! shit, next talk to iran and figure out how the government fixed the homosexuality 'problem' over there. maybe they just taxed sex, another brilliant idea!

I had no idea that there were minimum prices for alcohol until this story came out.

And here I just thought Canadian beer in Canada was more expensive simply because it was better. Now, I guess there are two reasons. 😛

Ah, the sin tax. The perfect place to get more money and say you're doing it for a good cause.

Ah yes, cause it worked so well with cigarettes.

The cigarette tax was effective. Consumption decreased...

The tax was also particularly effective among teens, which was the group policy makers were targeting.

Quote:

Tax increases are the single most effective intervention to reduce demand for tobacco (tax increases that raise the real price of cigarettes by 10% would reduce smoking by about 4% in high income countries and by about 8% in low income or middle income countries)
Tax comprises about two thirds of retail price of cigarettes in most high income countries but is less than half of the total price on average in lower income countries
Improvements in the quality and extent of information, comprehensive bans on tobacco advertising and promotion, prominent warning labels, restrictions on smoking in public places, and increased access to nicotine replacement treatments are effective in reducing smoking
Reducing the supply of tobacco is not effective in reducing tobacco consumption
Comprehensive tobacco control policies are unlikely to harm economies

Can you just not talk when you don't know what the hell you're talking about?

Yup, greedy bastards. The price of beer here is already steep, gotta get more $ out of it on the holidays because they know everyone will buy it regardless.

I also went to Mandarin the other day for lunch and it was $ 16.99 + tax !!!!!!! I was like WTF when I got the bill. Reason is, month of December is holiday season, price is more.

GG

Wow, that sucks. Beer is too expensive as it is. I had to switch from Ommegang, Rogue, Chimay, Duvel, and the like to PBR.

Can you buy beer from Costco and sneak it across the border?

I wish I could buy beer at Costco, or even a gas station. Mmm life outside of Ontario must be amazing!

Right. Because Moosehead and Molson are just great examples of exemplary brewing

Wow, yes sir, ummm, from will now on I will research all the one liners I make in jest on an off-topic forum in response to other comments that are lighthearted. And such a witty finishing comeback. You should get that sarcasm/humor meter fixed.

Canadian beer sucks. I don't understand that national pride in something bad like Molson.
