What is even worse are the jerks that will do this in the Dunkin Donuts drive thru as cars are backing up out to the street !

At least it wasn't restricted securities. I got stuck behind someone purchasing groceries with combination of cash and welfare check. He tried to buy a pack of dozen 'organic' eggs that costs about $3 to $4 and some unnecessary cosmetics on food stamps. They weren't food stamp approved items and cash register machine was programmed to deny it, so they had to call the supervisor down to help out the cashier. I wasn't too happy about the wait, but I was very pleased with strict control over what people could purchase on welfare checks.

Debit/Interac is the most popular form of payment in Canada.

Most stores don't even accept personal cheques any more. If they do, they usually also require a credit card.

My one buddy used to buy everything with checks. He never carried cash or credit cards. Ever. I know that 100k doesn't qualify him for millionare status but if you can't cut down on the money you owe then you've got serious problems.

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to have access to money.

I hate writing checks. I don't carry more than $20 on me (except when I'm at work, then it's $40, but $20 of that is store cash that I use to make change). I use my credit card for most purchases. The only check I write is at the end of the month to the credit card company.

Now if it's an ancient person who can barely write at all, then checks can take a LONG time....

Holy crap..that sounds so familiar. Usually they don't wait until everything is bagged, though.

Also, my store is where elderly people come - they have a bus that takes them here. I live in a college town (Gainesville - home of UF), and the vast majority of people are old. It's fairly rare (percentage-wise) for people under 30 to come through. I'm not saying that over 30 is old..but I had to pick a year somewhere - so no offense meant to the ones over 30 🙂

Always used a check...never a debit card. Isn't using a checkbook better for balancing your account? Instead of dozens of receipts to organize, I have dupes of all my checks that I've written in my register. Just seems more convenient.

Some stores such as Wal*Mart has electronic check filler.

its more uplifting to see people in the grocery store in your area writing checks instead of using food stamps like my area. i swear i never saw what food stamps looked like EVER till we moved here.

Food stamp transaction takes forever in establishments I frequent as they ensure it is for themselve and they aren't purchasing unauthorized items.

Yay for heavier restrictions on non-essential food purchases on food stamp. If they paid in comination of cash and food stamp, I'm not sure if they can pay for the unapproved items with cash and apply welfare only on approved items. I think they should require the person to apply the cash and welfare toward approved items before authorization for unapproved items are granted.

I don't like waiting, but I am all for increased restriction and increased security on welfare purchases. I don't know what is the consequence of walfare fraud(i.e. making obvious purchase for someone else in store and get the cash instead), but I sure hope it to be a felony.

I had to write a cheque for a 32 cent stamp once. Forgot my wallet at home, only a dollar or two in the checking account, and the Post Office window was closing in two minutes. Had to be postmarked that day, or I would pay a late fee, and not an ATM machine in sight. So I wrote the cheque. Just glad they knew me on sight at the P.O., so I did not need my ID to write the cheque.

For those arguing against cheques, can you float a payment with your debit card until pay day? 😛

I usually only write one check a month. I suppose if I didn't mind the 2 week lead time I could pay that one check with electronic bill pay. We always pay at the supermarket with cash or atm/credit card. I hate writing checks.

I hate checks. I told the bank to not even issue me any checks. The only check I have is the one I use for direct deposit forms. Other then that, I use my check card.
