Hmm. Seems deliciously scandalous to me. Ordain Women is a group seeking equal rights for women within the Mormon religion. Apparently Mormon women get kicked out of the church when they get too uppity though. As a purely Mormon issue it's no big deal, but as a Women's rights issue there's potential for a huge news story.

The verdict has been handed down in the disciplinary trial of Kate Kelly, one of the founders of the group Ordain Women. Today, Kelly’s former ecclesiastical leader in Virginia, Bishop Mark Harrison, contacted Kelly by email to inform her that the all-male panel of judges who tried her in absentia on Sunday, June 22nd, has convicted her on the charge of apostasy and has decided to excommunicate her, which is the most serious punishment that can be levied by a Church court. Bishop Harrison explained the consequences of excommunication and the conditions he has imposed upon Kelly, in order for her to be considered worthy of future re-baptism into the Church:
” . . . our determination is that you be excommunicated for conduct contrary to the laws and order of the Church. This means that you may not wear temple garments or contribute tithes and offerings. You may not take the sacrament, hold a Church calling, give a talk in Church, offer a public prayer in behalf of the class or congregation in a Church meeting, or vote in the sustaining of Church officers. These conditions almost always last at least one year. If you show true repentance and satisfy the conditions imposed below while you are no longer a member, you may be readmitted by baptism and confirmation.
“In order to be considered for readmission to the Church, you will need to demonstrate over a period of time that you have stopped teachings and actions that undermine the Church, its leaders, and the doctrine of the priesthood. You must be truthful in your communications with others regarding matters that involve your priesthood leaders, including the administration of Church discipline, and you must stop trying to gain a following for yourself or your cause and taking actions that could lead others away from the Church.”
Kelly says, “The decision to force me outside my congregation and community is exceptionally painful. Today is a tragic day for my family and me as we process the many ways this will impact us, both in this life and in the eternities. I love the gospel and the courage of its people. Don’t leave. Stay, and make things better.”
Debra Jenson of Ordain Women said, “We are deeply saddened by this news. As Mormons we recognize the gravity of this action. We follow the directive of Mosiah 18:9 and will mourn with our sister as she mourns. We regret that there is no way to predict how local leaders will react to conversations about gender inequality in the Church—-many have been supportive in these discussions, others have not. Ordain Women will continue.”

To me this seems to reflect pretty badly on the Mormon Church. It will be discussed well outside of Utah I think.

You can't see how this looks to the rest of the world? The world is always going to side with the person who is fighting for equal rights. So shes automatically the good guy in this story. Now she's being oppressed by the stodgy old men looking to maintain the status quo? It couldn't be more obvious who history will be kinder to. Its almost like the script of a lifetime movie or something.

A lot of the rest of the world is on board with the whole subjugating women thing.




Anyone who cares about equal rights and freedom should already hold the mormon church in low regard. This shouldn't be a surprise or change anything.

That's a bit of an overgeneralization, but is certain to be the case in the US.

Still, this is on par with hearing that a political dissident has been jailed in Russia - utterly unsurprising. Some things never change, and most other things change only very slowly.

I guess what I'm thinking of is first world countries. Of those the US may be the only country that cares about Mormons one way or the other anyway.
 
Worldwide membership is 14M, with 6M in the US, so yeah it's mostly a US problem. I ran across one of their missions in Peru, and the locals were mostly ambivalent but appreciated the good social work they were doing. I think around here we care less about social work and more about solicitors and evangelists.
 
I can't figure out why this is news or why anyone cares. She and anyone that supports her is an idiot and doesn't understand basic, universal religious ideas.

She is a member of a religion. By definition, a religion is of God, not of man. Any religion that rolls over and makes concessions because of social pressure is admitting they are not a true religion. It's the same reason the Catholics won't allow women in the priesthood. Their God doesn't cave in to the wishes of men or he/she would cease to be God.

When you belong to a religion then you agree to ALL of their tenants. You don't get to pick and choose. If some of those commandments and rules don't fit you, then this is not your religion. Find the one that fits or admit you are a sinner. Your participation in a religion is voluntary.

She got what she deserved and I would have banished her for apostasy as well.

I'm agnostic and this is the kind of thing that pisses me off about religious people. In general, the religions themselves are not the problem. It's the followers.
 
This sounds exactly like the type of thing high ranking officials would do. Disenfranchise and demotivate those who don't have power in order to secure their own place of power. Bunch of con artists.

Well to be fair, they caved on polygamy which was a prerequisite to be a state. And they caved in the late 70s to allow blacks to obtain the priesthood due to the civil rights movement. All she was doing was calling for a change. I don't know if that warrants excommunication, almost anyone within any religion has a thing or two they would like changed.
