eh, i don't remember the exact figures, but the rate of college graduation is even worse. more likely to be in jail or something. and yes its cultural. the "man" doesn't have to keep you down if you do it yourself.

Barely half of all black, Hispanic and Native American students who entered U.S. high schools in 2000 will receive diplomas this year, according to a new report that challenges conventional methods of calculating graduation rates.

Let me sum up half of all the posts that will show up in this thread by saying this "It's all Bush and his cronies' fault"

Dumb as rocks by their own choice but we can't "leave them behind" , so we have to drag down all the rest that want to have more smarts than a rock

Oh, that's right, the only way we can race to the bottom and compete with China, so we can have our own 20 cents an hour workforce, brilliant, Genius actually.

Ask Rod Paige about the Houston Miracle . . .

Well, he ought to be glad. Those "Terrorists" are not even doing a good job.

Of all students who entered ninth grade four years ago, 68 percent are expected to graduate this year. The rates for minorities are considerably lower -- 50 percent for blacks, 51 percent for Native Americans and 53 percent for Hispanics -- according to a measure devised by the nonprofit Urban Institute in Washington.

I can't tell from these numbers, or can even figure it out, but what would then be the non-minority graduation rates?
Also, the Asian rates would be interesting.

I also suspect that the numbers are skewed if students are held back.

i thought that was first generation immigrants

No not at all. What kind of jobs do you think uneducated poor minorities take whos ancestors have been here 100s of years? Minimum wage jobs.

Nope. We have to throw billions of dollars at the problem ala "The Great Society" programs according to liberals and other left wingers. According to them this is everyone's problem and the wealthy must pay more taxes because Paco can't make it through high school..

This is a internal cultural issue, but it does become everyones problem when your taxes pay for incarcerating uneducated criminals who happen to be minorities. Not to mention costs of policing, etc. There's an inverse correlation between education and a host of problems including crime, so whatever preventive measures turn out to be cost effective, I say do it.

I agree. Education must be privatized and fixed. Public education has just been an utter disaster in the past couple decades. However, even fixing education may not solve the problem. If blacks/hispanics have a culture of not embracing education it doesn't matter what institution they are in, they still won't make the grade.

That being said maybe a trade school program would be more effective than a standard education for a lot of these dropouts. Private companies training them up so they can at least stay out of the poverty zone.
