Or a large majority are older adults who didn't need it at the time.

Lots of kids quit school to work for the big three.

I think the graduation rate of 68.3% was for 2004

the high school graduation rate fell to 68.3 percent this year from 72.9 percent in 1990.

This article you have as the link, talks about obesity, not education..
did you paste the wrong one??

no he linked it right. from his link

The health record is also related to social and economic factors such as poverty and high school graduation rates, the report said. It found the number of children living in poverty increased in 25 states since the 2004 report, and that the high school graduation rate fell to 68.3 percent this year from 72.9 percent in 1990.

Nah, 30% of them don't live in really good conditions so they probably fail or go do something. Jobs, crime, fooling around, etc.
Probably only a small %age don't have a high school nearby.

didnt read the article but America does attract and always has a immigrant population because America knows what to do with an immigrant... but that's another discussion.

Immigrants and their children brought over here don't necessarily go to or complete school for a number of personal reasons. This could contribute to the number identified in the article.

It would be interesting to see the numbers for immigrants and for Americans. Anyone have a link that would show the numbers?

Less people to take my job. But we need to cut welfare, I'm not paying for those slackers.

Want to know something even more disturbing? In Dallas ISD, only 40% of students that begin high school actually graduate. 60% drop-out or flunk-out.

That number can be a little misleading, there are people who simply never went to HS (yet have college degrees).

I do not have any kind of HS equivalency, & neither does my sister - Yet we both have college degrees.

Maybe if we created an education system that, nationwide, was worthwhile attending we would see fewer people drop out. To say that people who don't graduate are 'slackers' is to completely miss the point that American education, particularly in urban areas is awful. Teachers aren't paid well, schools are not funded, many students have disciplinary problems and, yet, we do little to actually help the school system.

Combine that with the demphasis on education, particularly in poorer communities, and you begin to see the problem. Without parents actively encouraging children (which I'm sure your parents did), it is hard to convince a child to attend school every day. Plus, when the schools themselves aren't safe and when most urban children do not perceive school as a 'way out' the potential for dropouts skyrockets.

Instead of destroying our welfare system, why don't we instead try to address the real issue at hand, which is the collapse of the american education system?

the parental support. The economic support. etc. Privaledged doesnt mean well the school bus stops near by they can get on like everyone else. Not the case when going to school instead of working means not eating vs. eating.

Teachers are paid very well, they have a higher salary than teachers in other industrialized nations. At the school district I graduated from average teacher salary was around 70,000 a year, and I went to a poor school district.

Close: http://inpathways.net/_ACRNA/hs_grad_rates.pdf

The national graduation rate for the class of 1998 was 71%. For white students the rate was 78%, while it was 56% for African-American students and 54% for Latino students.

And there in lies the problem. Damn minorities bringing our numbers down...
