Only 2 fans spinnong on 1080 ti is this normal?

Just fired up a new build with a Gigabyte Aorus Geforce 1080 ti it's my first build with a high end card and only 2 fans are spinning up (getting no picture on my screen either) is this a dud card or is the fan issue normal?

Did you connect the power connectors to the video card? Only reason I ask was because I was wracking my head on the table trying to figure out a similar problem I had, only to realize I forgot to plug in the power into the video card.

Maybe a silly question but since you say it is your first high end card... did you plug the power connector into the video card too?

EDIT:

Beat me to it.

Yes both power connections are made into the video card, figured out the lack of picture, one of the power connections to the motherboard had come out so everything's fired up now and I'm getting a picture but still only 2 fans spinning on video card.

Are all of the fans on the card plugged in on the card? They usually have a little tiny plug.and jack arrangement for each fan.

Maybe you only get all 3 fans going if the card gets hot?

Try using a utility like Afterburner to manually adjust the fan speed. That way if one fan stops when under a certain temperature, when you change the fan profile to say something like 50%, it should start spinning. If it doesn't do that after you override the GPU's fan settings, then the fan is either defective or maybe it is not fully plugged in.

I've just discovered the last fan is fouling the card frame, when I push it round it'll start up but it clatters for a bit then stops. Looks like a return is on the cards....🙁 Thanks for the replies anyhoo.

If this card was running with only 2 fans for about 1.5 hours but only doing a windows installation and bios setup do you think it would have caused any damage to the card? it was the fan nearest the back of the computer that was jammed.

I doubt it would damage the card as load would be pretty much zero unless gaming. If it was me I'd just try and fix the issue with the fan myself if possible.

Yeah that's my preference too but it's an £860 card and if there's any chance of having caused a problem I don't want to risk it. Problem is the vendor doesn't seem to have a replacement in stock so it might be a bit of a wait to return it.

So the fan is hitting the shroud causing it to stop spinning? Can you return to Gigabyte directly via RMA?

Don't know, I've never tried to do that before, what would be the procedure?

Open a Support Case on Gigabyte's country-specific website. On their EU Site, it only indicates to contact the location where your original order was placed, so it sounds like you'll simply have to deal with the vendor on this.

Hmm, tried going through CCL but they say there is no restock date in the near future so it's a repair or a refund.......

Gigabyte is usually pretty good about sending you the fan assembly without making you send the entire thing back. They will replace it for you if you arent comfortable and or dont care to be without it for a little bit.

I think the fan fouling is easy enough to fix, just push the metal framework back a couple of mm, what's worrying me more is whether running it for a couple of hours on 2 fans would have damaged the card in any way or stressed it.

As @RadiclDreamer mentioned, you have to go through the Vendor if you want to RMA the card and you're in the EU. However, if this is a malfunctioning part and you're handy enough, Gigabyte is good about letting you replace those components. It's worth opening a support case on Gigabyte's website.

No. For marketing reasons almost all of those cards have a built-in passive mode anyways. While just on the desktop, the fans on my EVGA 1080 Ti don't even turn on.

Well the remaining two fans wern't going full throttle so maybe that was a sign that temps weren't too bad.

As thecoolnessrune said, some cards will spin down and even turn off fans in passive mode. If you are seeing the fan physically hit something, that will stop it too, but it is sometimes normal for fans to slow or stop when not under large loads. Each card is different though.
