only 1-2mb on 100% wireless signal strength?

I just got a new D-link router and have a USB Netgear card along with an Orinoco Silver WiFi pcmcia card. I connect at 11mb on my USB netgear that is connected to my desktop, but only 1-2mb for the Orinoco pcmcia card even though both show excellent (100% all full green bars) signal strength. Any ideas?

The Orinoco card is set for 1-2 Mb in it's properties perhaps?

seems odd that there would be such a setting. I didn't see such an option but it's a good idea to recheck the settings to make sure there isn't a limit.

It would be a default bitrate, probably on an advanced tab. I would wager that there is a default rate setting somewhere on that driver since it is an enterprise card.

I suspect there is something wrong with the card. The Orinoco has a Client Manager that allows you to do a diagnostic on it. For a split second after you do the diagnostic, the connection will go to 11mb for a split second, then drop to 6mb for another second and then drop to 1-2mb and stay there.

I doubt that your USB wireless is getting you 11mbps. Actual wireless speeds, even when the access point and receiving unit are right next to each other, are more like 3-4 mbps tops.

didn't know that Eric1285. Thanks for informing me. Just info, but for those who wonder whether or not you're able to stream video over it, I am able to stream avi files over my network with the given strength of signal I get.

Optimally such a connection should yield 4-6Mb/sec.

i just recently helped a friend change his 6 computer network from a wired to totally wireless network. he got the parts from dell, truemobile 1184 wireless router, plus 6 usb wireless adapters. 4 of these computers are in close proximity, with very good range, while the other 2 machines are in room right next door. for internet surfing, everything works great, with all clients being able to hit 190 kb/sec for downloads, however, it is for file sharing and swapping that has me concerned. the fastest throughput between any two computers is now ~ 2 mbps ( 250 kilobyte/sec). like PushHands has stated, all the computers in the network also report 95-100% range with Excellent connectivity.

now, i know that adding more wireless clients will slow the connection down, but should it be this much for 6 wireless machines? i am probably in the same boat as PushHands.
