I currently manage a website for my family where we post Christmas wishlists and Birthday wishlists and keep in touch through a single comment wall similar to Facebook. Recently, I expanded the site to add some competition and made it where users can earn points for signing in on a daily basis, betting there points on sporting events, and playing a question game (where each question is worth a certain amt of points who ever answers it correct first gets the points) The points don't have any real value, but whoever has the most points by years end receives a gift card for $100.00. It encourages everyone to participate and compete. I want to expand this even more but I'm struggling with ideas. I want to incorporate leveling or ranks, for example if they reach 4,000 points they get the ability to cash in those points for a perk like 'double points' so then from that point on they would receive double the points for anything they win. This was just one idea but I'm looking for more ideas with more detail on how I can create ranks or leveling. Another idea was if someone hits 4,000 points they get access to a VIP game that only 4,000 points or higher users can view, but the second they lose points and go below 4,000 they can't access that game anymore..

If anyone can spit some ideas out of how I can add to my site I will greatly appreciate it, just looking for ideas not code or programming help. If you come up with something that I end up using I would be willing to send you a few bucks via PayPal for your time.

Thanks everyone!

Maybe this is the wrong section to post this in? If you want to encourage participation, you might get inspiration by some online browser-based games. Every day or week each user gets a certain number of "turns" and you use them or lose them. Each turn or action can let do stuff like play games or other points-winning activities. Turn in points for goodies or compare points at the end of every quarter or something for a prize.

There's a game called Cowclicker on facebook that's worth checking out if you've never heard of it. It's a parody of social games like farmville, but the basic elements that go into a social game are all presented pretty simplistically. If you want "leveling up", you can always give people an online avatar of some sort, and higher levels give more customization perks to the avatar. Double points after a certain level isn't a great idea since it just allows people who already have a point lead to get an even bigger lead and once you have no chance of beating the leader, there's no sense in playing anymore.
