It's not as horrifically taboo in Japan as in the US as I understand it. Supposedly it's not uncommon for men to look towards underage girls for sex in Japan (ever heard of Japanese school girls? :Q ) and this naturally brings in prostitution.

It's kind of a dirty secret of Japanese society that outsiders don't really know about. Of course, thx to the internet, more people are learning about these Japanese fetishes and stuff.

It's funny, Japanese culture is full of sex and nakedness and similar stuff but it's an issue that's never discussed directly. Very little or no sex ed, no parental discussions, yet tv and comics and even the papers are full of it.

btw, I know they have the vending machines but I've never stumbled upon one yet.

Well, in many East Asian societies, 13- or 14-year-old concubines were not uncommon.

And Japan has a tradition of being open to sexual matters. A Japanese history professor once told me about this very graphic and detailed sex manual written by a mother for her daughter before she got married.

As much as I do not like 13-year-old prostitution, it is not as big of a taboo in Japan, although the modern Japanese culture has changed a lot.
