Ripped from our favorite bargain site...

hifi.com has the Onkyo DV-SP300 Progressive Scan DVD/MP3 CD player with 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converters for only $99.99 shipped free.

Seems to be a really good price for a progressive scan dvd with a really good brand name.

good find. does anyone know if this is region free?? I know that all pioneer elite dvd players are region free.

I'd go w/ the cheaper silver Cyberhome. You can hack it too just like an Apex. The quality of the cyberhome may be not as good as the Onkyo but it's just a DVD player.

I'm think the sp300 is discontinued, since the sp500 is out. But for 100 dollars, you can't go wrong w/ a good dvd player w/ progressive scan...

Let's hear you post that, when your CyberHo dies and you can't get them to rma it...

There is such a difference between low-end dvd players and the nicer stuff. I like the Apex cause it plays everything but video quality sucks and the little bugs here and there.

Once you watch a dvd on a nice player...there is no going back.

No reviews at all on this player over at vcdhelp. Curious if this thing plays VCD and/or SVCD. Anyone own it and know..?

The SP-500 was released on the same day as the SP-300. Both were released three months ago...so no, the SP-300 is not a discontinued unit.

My wife's mom was just saying the other day that she finally wants to buy a DVD player...she was ready to pay more for non-progressive.

Anyone know if this plays VBR MP3's and supports MP3's in folders?

I'm tired of the little glitches in the Apex players and am ready to spend a little more for a name-brand player. The hackability of the Apex, Cyberhone, etc. is pretty cool, but I've come to realize that I don't need any of that, I usually just pop in a DVD and watch it.

Yeah, what gnat said.

I'd like to know how it displays folders and files, and how many characters of the path/filename are shown. Anyone reading this already own one of these?

I went on the Onkyo site and dl'ed the manual. Looks like the MP3 abilities of this deck are sub-par at best.
No multisession and doesn't support VBR.
Since decent MP3 playback is important (I use the same MP3 CD's in the car as well), I'm looking at the Panasonic DVD-RV32K instead since it (supposedly) supports multisession and VBR. No progressive scan, but I don't have a TV that supports it anyway and probably won't for at least 2 more years at which time I'll be more than ready for a new DVD player.

cyberhome or onkyo. hmm...

Cyberhome?

Unless this Onkyo player is the lowest-end model (it might be the low-end line designed and manufactured NOT in Japan and targets only on general user), going for Onkyo is a no-brainer. Onkyo (Japan) is one of the high quality brands among AV fans in Asian countries.

You might save a few $$ on the Cyberhome, but your chances of getting a dud and having to return it could be quite high. Sure, some people have gotten great Cyberhome players, while others have not. It appears their build quality is very inconsistant. Go for the Onkyo.
