code doesn't work, would have loved it if it did though,

you might want to take that code out

How are you getting it to $279? That code doesn't get it any cheaper for me.

The system is $349 for the black refurb model. I put in the code, **** worked for me, put in my CC number and info. Submitted my info and on the screen where it says PLACE ORDER it said total $269.99, I have 10 onkyo points. The code worked earlier, I know cause I bought a couple systems. It is dead no however.

But never put anything in between the DVD player and the TV as far as video goes.

Could you please expand on this? This sentence sounds like a hard rule, but the rest of the thread sounds less straightforward. It's analog so there may be some quality loss, but whether you can detect it probably depends on your receiver, cables, etc. Copy protection was also mentioned, but that would probably obvious if it happened. I would like the simplicity of a single device to change sources on, but I also want quality on my HDTV. (I know that to switch from the TV's tuner to anything else will require 2 changes because obviously the TV's tuner doesn't run through the receiver.)

P.S.
Thank you FrankyJunior for continuing to answer questions in this thread! 🙂

I removed my DVDs from the player and re-selected 16:9 in the DVD player setup screens. Still no 16:9.

Has anyone successfully been able to get a 16:9 picture out of this player?

Is it possible that mine is faulty? Or just user error?

i jumped on this biatch and got the set + dvd for $350 shipped from shoponkyo and everything works great. says refurb and minor cosmetic defects but i couldnt tell. dvd player works fine - I don't know what the deal is with your 16:9 stuff. All I know is I put in LOTR and donnie dorko on and the house shakes when donnie starts stabbing the giant rabbit in the mirror.

I just got in on the $269.99 deal and was wondering if you guys got cables with yours and if you were happy with the "refurbness"

Thanks in advance - i just ordered some cables from cablesforless.com - 100' for $36 aint bad - and got a couple optical cables too.

I am giddy - cant wait to get this bad boy set up.

I ordered my cables from more4mymoney.com (also, m4mm.com) after cables for less decided to not ship my entire order over Thanksgiving weekend (order placed on Tuesday) because a $2.00 cable was OOS. I canceled my order with them on Monday morning and ordered from m4mm.com. Total was less, quality was great, and cables arrived on Thursday.

Is setting the initial setup of the DVD player to 16:9 the only thing you did to this "biatch" to get a 16:9 picture?

I can't speak as to the validity of the claim, but the manual for this DVD player states that running the DVD feed through a receiver may cause problems with certain forms of copy protection....just fyi.

That would be Macrovision issues. It's a type of copyprotection where the picture goes dark and then light, IIRC. It's implemented to protect against people making VHS copies of legitimate discs.

A quick run of the DVD through DVD Shrink fixes all problems with macrovision, thus, giving the user a flawless playback. 😉

I have the same problem with my DVD player going through the receiver via component. It was working in 16:9 over component when plugged directly into the TV, but when gong through the receiver it doesn't. I know how to change the aspect ratio and I tried toggling in and out of 4:3 and still nothing. My DVD player is an older Toshiba.

Has anyone gotten a DVD player other than the free Onkyo one to work?

From the Onkyo website - why should this be done???

Two reasons that I know of...

1) The IR feature (where your receiver can pass remote control commands to other components) need an analog connection, in addition to the IR cable connection (for reasons unknown to me).

and

2) If you ever want to hook up some recording device...cassette recorder, VCR, etc., you will need analog connections for that.

There are some instances where you'd want to run your video through your receiver, but running to the tv from your DVD player or running through the receiver should both work for you.

Question for you: My 27" TV has only one component video input on it, but I have multiple component sources. Say I bought a nice receiver package, such as the deal in this thread, would it be a bad thing to run the video/sound all through the receiver and then the main component outputs from the receiver to the TV? Do I lose a lot of signal/quality doing this? I'm guessing if the receiver is very good, there shouldn't be any problems.

Thanks!

Yeah, that's one of the big reasons to run through the receiver if you can't connect all your devices to your display directly.
Another advantage is potentially making control easier by only having to use the receiver remote to switch inputs etc.

My projector only has a single component input, so I'm running my various sources through my receiver for switching.

Well I never had an issue in the couple hundred DVDs I've watched though my receiver, but I guess I could have just not run into the right movie yet.

A couple of the reviews on the shoponkyo website mention Ipod compatability.

What are they talking about?

TIA

I haven't had a chance to setup the system b/c i've been sick : (

however. There was a little card that came with the thing...advertising ds-a1 a remote interactive dock for ipod.

says ipod cradle for onkyo components and system...charges ipod, rca stereo audio output, video output for ipod photo slide show, control your ipod using your onkyo remote.

so I imagine if your tags are right...might show what song is playing when you hook up rca cable and connect ipod and can show video too? 😱
