I've got one blown speaker (front left) with my refurb unit.

Anyone have experience/advice with returns to Onkyo?

Just to be sure here - did you do some testing to make sure it's the speakers that's bad (that is if it's not something you can actually see is bad)?

(Like disconnecting the dead speakers and replacing it with a different one to make sure it's the speaker itself and not the receiver or speaker wire)

really? I can still put it in my cart..

Damn, it's back again, the dvd player that is. However, I haven't been able to complete checkout for almost a week. Whenever I add it to my cart and press checkout, after the $50 extra warranty offer, I click no thanks and it just errors out. I sthis a firefox or firewall issue?

Yep, used the same receiver output and speaker wire with the right front speaker...no problems. Put the left front speaker on the right front output with the right front speaker wire...no problems.

Seems to just be a bad speaker, from what I can tell.

So since this thread is amonth old.. What's the current best offer on this? The link in the OP has it for $449 or so. Are there coupons good at Crutchfield or for a different site that sells the same item? Bro-in-Law is looking for an all inclusive system like this and it might be perfect for him.

shoponkyo.com had the best deal for me...$350 shipped for refurb unit (using coupon code) plus the p-scan DVD player.

I received mine the day after Thanksgiving and set it up the same day. The speakers sound alright for the price. I had to boost the gain on the surround speakers to hear anything out of them. Other than that, it's a damn steal for the DVD player and the home theater system at $350. The 6 disc DVD changer is nice, especially when you want to do a 6 movies melee 🙂

Circuit City has it for $379 (after ''add to cart')

There are Crutchfield coupons. Do a search. If you can find them, PM me.

I received mine and I have a question. Do I have to be concerned about the magnets in the subwoofer, center, or front speakers being too close to the hard drive in my DVR?

Shouldn't be a problem.

Search for subwoofer in general hardware and you'll find some threads on the matter.

Couple of questions:

The receiver has composite inputs for the DVD player, but the DVD player manual says not to put anything between the DVD video and the TV, ie hook the composite directly to the TV (not the receiver). Which way is right?

I can't seem to get the DVD player to broadcast in 16:9. I've set the TV shape to 16:9 Uncompressed in the DVD initial setup, but all I'm getting on the TV is 480p in 4:3. I am viewing Minority Report (Widescreen) and Digial Video Essentials (which says 1.78:1 on the sleeve). My TV (61" InFocus DLP) normally recognizes HD and locks itself in 16:9 (in other words, the "Format" button doesn't cycle through stretch, cinematic, zoom, etc.). But, when getting 480p from the DVD player, I can still cycle...but no 16:9. ???

Thanks for any help.

Normally on DVD players you have to go into their internal settings to change things like that.

Try taking out any disc and then going into the setup menu. Sometimes you get more options when you do that (if you haven't already).

But never put anything in between the DVD player and the TV as far as video goes. VIdeo Out goes to the TV, audio goes to the tuner/amp.

Is 480p the best output possible from this DVD unit?

Unless it's an upconverting player (which it probably isn't), then 480p is all you get.

Like Franky Junior said, there's probably a 4:3 / 16:9 option in the DVD menu somewhere that you have to change.

There are some instances where you'd want to run your video through your receiver, but running to the tv from your DVD player or running through the receiver should both work for you.

Question for you: My 27" TV has only one component video input on it, but I have multiple component sources. Say I bought a nice receiver package, such as the deal in this thread, would it be a bad thing to run the video/sound all through the receiver and then the main component outputs from the receiver to the TV? Do I lose a lot of signal/quality doing this? I'm guessing if the receiver is very good, there shouldn't be any problems.

Thanks!

If you use yoru receiver basically as a splitter (or joiner maybe would be more appropriate) then it should work fine if that's what it's actually designed to do.

If your receiver has multiple Component inputs and then one main component output, then it would work fine for that. There might be some signal loss but probably not too much.

I only have my DVD player with Component outputs so it just goes straight to the TV.

Yeah, that's one of the big reasons to run through the receiver if you can't connect all your devices to your display directly.
Another advantage is potentially making control easier by only having to use the receiver remote to switch inputs etc.

My projector only has a single component input, so I'm running my various sources through my receiver for switching.

I can't speak as to the validity of the claim, but the manual for this DVD player states that running the DVD feed through a receiver may cause problems with certain forms of copy protection....just fyi.
