I have this system in my own HT.
I love it, for an HTIB it sounds great.
Be prepared, this comes in a very large box!

You can also get refurbs direct from the mfg at:

http://www.shoponkyo.com

When you sign up you can earn points toward future purchases, each point worth a buck off your next purchase.

My experience was this:
I ordered and received the system within a few days via FedEx. No charge for shipping btw.

I got it all set up and found one of the front speakers didn't work.
Onkyo shipped out a whole new system, I removed the right front spkr from the box, put the defective one in it's place and sent it back (prepaid by Onkyo).

It has worked flawlessly for the past 9 months!

Yep, $339 for refurb at shoponkyo. Just bought and set up a refurb S790 one for my dad. Looks and functions as if brand new, great, great deal.

I clicked on this after looking at the model number (790) hoping it was a receiver that was even higher quality than the SR674 that I've been eyeing up for the last few months...

Darn. :p

I got one from CC last week. I had a nice JBL system (DVP600 II or something) but this is even better.

This is a good system. I bought it for my parents last year and its great. I thought I could build a better system using this receiver (refurbed) and fluance speakers, and the HTIB is better, as the sound is just as good, but the size of the speakers are smaller. Refurb quality from Onkyo is excellent.

How many digital inputs does this have? The CircuitCity specs say 2 but the photo looks like 3 optical+1 coaxial.

I've been looking at a refurbed unit also. My current total from Onkyo online is 317 shipped. But these systems don't come with speaker wire, correct? Vann's usually has the combo with the speaker stands, which do cost about $50, but it comes and goes and right now they aren't offering it.

For the people that ordered refurbs, where did it ship from and how long did it take?

They come with all speaker wires (cheap ones, but usable), and they ship very quickly from New Jersey I think. You'll get the system within a week. My refurb HT-780 was $289 three months ago and looks and performs as if brand new.

I thought the refurbs did not come with speaker wires. That's what their site says. I'm not complaining though... that will save me another $30 bucks for 16 AWG wire from Frys. Incidently, did anyone purchase thicker speaker wire and if so was it worth it? If the refurb doesn't come with wire the cheapest wire i could find at Frys was Monster 16 AWG.

I wouldn't say the receiver that came with this HTIB is better than the TX-SR674. While it has 100 watts x 7, like the above post says, it doesn't do HDMI. The 674 has only 95 watts x 7 but has HDMI , and even pass thru for component and everything else. It doesn't however upscale those inputs. It also has the mic for autocalibration of speakers.
I have recently installed the 790 HTIB at a friend's and they sound great for $449 then so I'm sure for less than $400, its even a better deal. As for the 674, I've installed one for a dedicated HT and its HDMI capabilites come in handy with only 1 cable going to the projector.

Hey man, do you know the thickness of the wire it comes with? If so, then going thicker may help.

Also, dont buy that monster stuff at Fry's...save your money. If you can wait, buy some cheap stuff at www.monoprice.com or go over to homedepot and buy some wire there!

OP: thanks for the deal. I was actually looking at HTIB's for a friend and this is perfect for him!

Monoprice for all your cable needs

Got my set last week, came with the 2 speaker stands, VERY impressed with the sound for a HTIB. (New, not refurbished from Vann's)

The ClubOnkyo.com Refurbished HT-S790 is currently $339 - 10% = $305, with Free Shipping. If you join ClubOnkyo, you get 10 Points (=$10 off your order), so it comes to $295.10 delivered.

Mine came with all the wires/etc. but YMMV.

Hmmm... the price on the refurbished receivers look pretty good... but are they hot? I've got a 5.1 Onkyo receiver that only goes up to S-Video and now that I've finally upgraded to an HDTV, the number of remote control swaps I have to do just to change inputs makes me feel like I'm in a juggling act.

I said that the refurbs come with wires even though they say cables are not included. Mine had 2x15 ft. fronts, 1x15 ft. center, 4x30 ft. surrounds (side and back), 1x10 ft. subwoofer. The wires are color-coded for each speaker which helps in hooking everything up, but they are 18 gauge at best.

Good to hear. Hopefully i will also receive cables.

ImpalaSS99,
I've heard that it comes with thin wire, but i don't know the gauge. I've read of people upgrading to 16AWG with it being the thickest that the speaker posts will take. Is it worth it to upgrade?

Too bad mono is out of stock right now... lol. That was the first place that i checked for wire. From what i've read 16AWG is the thickest the posts will take. If my refurb comes with wires i can wait otherwise i will have to buy locally. Frys is the closest place near me not counting Worst Buy of course.

Mono: out of stock
Home depot: have to buy a monster roll (unless their web stock is different?)
Radio Shack: out of stock
Worst Buy: didn't bother. I bet they only sell Monster junk.

Was looking at this for a long time and finally went to the store with every intent to purchase this setup, but buyer beware the speakers are quite large - so I went with the SR604/Polk Combo for my setup. Otherwise its great bang for the buck
