I'm debating with this receiver and the Bestbuy Yamaha receiver. Can someone give me a little comparison and which to choose? Both are the same price. Which brand is more reliable over the long run?

The Onkyo TXSR501 is one of the best budget receiver around. I would take the Onkyo over Yamaha. To save even more you can get a refurbished from Ecost with free shipping and no tax beside Cali.

Here is a previous Hot Deal thread regards to the Onkyo TXSR501 Link.

And for those who would like to go higher end, I would highly recommend getting the Denon 3803 deal from 6thave.

Along with the receiver you can add the speakers.

Circuit City also has the Onkyo SKSHT510 6.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker System at $199.99!

I got the refurb Onkyo from Ecost. Very nice receiver for the price. Sounds great with Fluance ss speakers.

You better watch out. This is NOT a HK, and the low wattage will kill your speakers due to clipping; assuming you pump up the volume.

I realize the Onkyo recievers are somewhat rating-generous. I have a tx-sr600, and although it is rated @ 80w/ch, it does 90w. (6.1 is obviously a different story)

Anywas, say you'll get 75w max out of this thing. This amp IS NOT what you want for such large speakers.

42" Speakers bring Back to the Future to mind.... Are you talking Floor Standing speakers or the kind that propelled MJFox accross the room?

Looks like the Onkyo has much more power.

i have yamaha and love the sound, especially for home theater. onkyo has a good rep as well, but each has a different sound. yamaha has a distinctive "clear highs" sound; many like it, some don't.

that yamaha only has one optical and one coaxial digital input (the original text description is wrong) . you may not think you need it now, but you will regret it later. the onyko has 2 optical and 1 coaxial input, not that much better but a little better. both have componenet video switching, which is good.

don't worry about wattages. these brands, especially the yamaha, rate their power much more conservatively than kenwood, pioneer, sony, etc. These are probably comparable to 90- 100 watts of the other brands.
